Tracy, CA....Oct 4........Ninth
quick Don Lehman from Rio Linda took advantage of the flat right front tires for
the faster Altamont Raceway Park regulars and emerged as the race leader with
just ten laps to go as he won the 100 lap Mark Hutton Memorial Northern
Nationals for late model pro stocks Saturday night at Altamont Raceway Park. It
was a big night for the two car Lehman team as brother Mike Lehman moved up from
the Super Trucks to score a $100 win in the dash and he paced the first 7 laps
of the 100 lapper before breaking a motor. D Lehman did much of his racing in
2003 with the Budweiser Late Model Shootouts at Shasta Speedway and his 100 lap
win paid $2000 with Reno NV long tow Randy Hedrick a $1000 second. Fast timer
Dan Harrington, a Roseville regular emerged in third worth $700 as all the
faster Altamont cars ended up pitting with flat tires. David Hulsey bounced back
from his pit stop to finish a $500 fourth and Jason Gilbert ended a sleepless
week repairing Irwindale Speedway damage by finishing a $400 fifth. It was the
final point night for the new CASA wingless sprint cars and they were scheduled
for a 50 lap feature. Time issues forced the officials to call the race complete
at 35 laps with series champion Tony Iacobitti winning his fourth feature race.
He led the final four laps after fast timer Chad Ede tangled with a lapped car.
Ede stormed back to finish 2nd in those final four laps on the quick paved
half-mile. Veteran Mike McCreary was third. For the second straight year, Pete
Anderson and Donnie Darter ran 1-2 in the 50 lap super stock special raced on
the smaller 1/4 mile paved oval. Blocking tactics by two of the faster Altamont
cars had cost fast timer Anderson the lead on lap 40, but he stormed back to
repass Darter on a lap 42 restart to score the $1000 win in their 50 lapper.
Darter ran second ahead of fellow Stockton racer Kannai Scantlin. Scott Winkler
was disqualified from a fourth place run for not reporting to the post race tech
area.
The
late model pro stock special drew a 29 car entry with long tows being Las Vegas
NV star Glen Burke and veteran Reno racer Hedrick. Farrington turned in the
quickest qualifying lap with his 19.241 lap. Lodi's Travis McCullough surprised
in second with a 19.330 and SRL Tour Late Model star Jeff Anthony returned to
his roots with a 19.338 in the Mike David car. Altamont track champion Verg
Beaty was offered the David ride when he destroyed his car on the final point
night action on Sept 13, but he didn't want to damage another owners car and
allowed Anthony to repeat the ride that he had for the rich Stockton 99 Speedway
season finale. Brock Monroe was fourth quick ahead of Hedrick, Hulsey, M Lehman
and track point runnerup Rusty Buholz. The dash was lined up completely inverted
and M Lehman used his $100 dash win to sit on the pole for the 100 lap feature.
Buholz was a $75 second and shared the front row with Hulsey pocketing $50 for
third. The front four rows for the 100 lapper were lined up by this dash finish
and the track elected to start all 29 cars on hand in the 100 lapper instead of
racing a B Main. The first three laps were counted on each caution flag in the
100 lapper allowing some laps to be counted and still giving teams the
opportunity to pit for repairs without losing a lap to the field. Buholz led M
Lehman on that opening round but coudn't maintain the high groove effort and M
Lehman was out front on lap 2. Hulsey and Anthony quickly shuffled the rim
riding Buholz back to fourth. Both Alex Harney and Monroe were early dropouts.
After leading through lap 7, M Lehman coasted to a stop with his race over.
Hulsey gained the lead and the former Mini Super Truck racer stayed out front
through lap 20. Anthony settled into second ahead of McCollough and Buholz.
Working lapped traffic, both Anthony and McCollough moved by Hulsey on lap 21.
Scott Chappell and John Flanagan tangled for a lap 31 yellow flag. Hulsey retook
second on lap 35 and both Buholz and Hedrick moved around McCollough on lap 38
for the 3-4 slots. Jason Piper was lapped in a lap 39 infield excursion and D
Lehman had advanced into the top five b y midway with McCollough sixth ahead of
Farrington, Gilbert and Teresa Morten. Burke lost a lap when he spun in the
middle of turn 1 on lap 52 and the winner of the last point race, Doyle Moen
lost fire to end his race. Madera regular George Woodward had to pit and the top
five were racing in tight fashion. McCollough broke while 8th on lap 70 and
leader Anthony got out of shape on the lap 73 restart with Morten and Gilbert
tangling. Hulsey had to pit from second with a flat tire. As the field came down
for the lap 76 green flag, leader Anthony spun wildily in turn 4 and he elected
to pit for new tires. Buholz was now the new leader, but he also slowed with a
flat right front on the restart. When Buholz pitted to check the tire, they
found other woes and retired with Hedrick now leading D Lehman and Farrington.
The last restart came on lap 90 and D Lehman was able to drove around Hedrick
for the top spot on lap 91. Farrington was now third ahead of the fast closing
Hulsey and Gilbert. D Lehman was able to stretch his lead on lap 96 when Hedrick
got tangled with Farrington. They continued in the 2-3 slots and D Lehman won
ahead of Hedrick, Farrington, Hulsey, Gilbert, Anthony and Howard Nevens. Both
Burke and Morten finished lap down in the 8-9 slots ahead of Flanagan.
The new unwinged sprint car
series on the lightning quick half-mile paved oval has seen 21 drivers earn
points and 15 appeared for the finale. The first car to time, young Ede was
quickest at 17.807. Iacobitti ran a 17.827 and Kenny Rines came out at the end
for a 18.048 third quick. With the long distance feature, no other events were
run and second ranked Bryan Bullard had to start in the rear after being unable
to post a time. The race was restarted after a red flag incident when long time
racer Paul Worden put Ivan's backup car into the turn 3 fence and got upsidedown.
Ivan Worden was forcibly restained by track officials as he raced to check on
the condition of his father. The night was also over for I Worden and Iacobitti
raced into the lead on lap 2 by passing McCreary. The feature had had a six car
inversion, but fast timer Ede climbed into second on lap 3. Veteran Don Hicks
followed him into third in the Joe Kuderca car. The next caution fell on lap 6
when veteran Earl Stanton forced Rines into the front wall with the race over
for both. Bullard was picking off spots and he took third from Hicks on lap 9.
When challenger Ede made an inside bid to take the lead from Iacobitti in turn 3
on lap 15, they made contact and both ended up in the grassy infield. Iacobitti
got back on the track after only being passed by Bullard. He then drove over
Bullard as they raced on lap 16. That lap was nullified but the race was over
for the damaged Bullard. Ede found himself leading Hicks and McCreary with
Iacobitti restarting in the rear. Iacobitti was third on alp 20 and he drove
underneath Hicks for second on lap 21. Hicks broke his engine for a lap 24
caution and Glenn Hopper pitted. The flying twosome of Ede and Iacobitti quickly
opened up a half-lap on third place McCreary. Ede tried to race underneath the
slower car of Dave Swartzbarg, but they tangled and Ede spun to bring out a
yellow flag. Ede restarted in the rear with just four laps remaining in the
shortened race. Iacobitti led to the checkered flag with regaining second with a
last lap move around McCreary. McCreary ran third ahead of Scott Clough, Hopper
and Marvin Mitchell.
The super stock special drew 7
Altamont regulars and 7 Stockton Speedway types. Anderson was quick time, but
there was an 8 car inversion for the 50 lapper. Aimee Sullivan pitted on a pace
lap and did not return until lap 6. Having enjoyed a strong rookie pavement
season, Terry DeCarlo Jr paced the first 11 laps. Anderson was fifth in just 2
laps and passed both Jerod Popejoy and second ranked Altamont racer Noah Salazar
on lap 8 for third. Anderson took second from Darter on lap 10 and drove around
DeCarlo on the outside for the lead on lap 12. Kannai Scantlin climbed to fourth
o lap 16 and Popejoy spun for a lap 18 yellow flag. DeCarlo got out of shape on
lap 20 and spun a lap alter with Scantlin now second ahead of Scott Winkler and
Darter. Darter was sent to the rear for spinning DeCarlo. When Salazar was
penalized to the rear for spinning the lapped car of A Sullivan, DeCarlo and
Darter found themselves back in the 4-5 slots. Darter raced back to 4th on lap
27. With 12 laps to go, Salazar slowed dramatically and Popejoy pulled alongside
to block the track for the faster Stockton entries. Darter saw what was
happening and moved real high to take the lead from Anderson on lap 40. When
Anderson did get around Salazar, Salazar punted him in the rear entering turn 3.
Anderson maintained control, but Salazar spun into the fence for a caution flag.
Once faced with a clear track, Anderson wasted no time retaking the lead from
Darter on lap 42. Anderson won ahead of Darter and Scantlin while track regular
Winkler was disqualified for not reporting to the tech area. This moved DeCarlo
up to fourth ahead of Don McClaren and Matt Erickson. Todd Carnahan and Cindy
Freitas rounded out the top 8.
