Factory Stocks, Claimers and Bombers

Phoenix, AZ......Sept 13........Taking just six laps to take the lead from the sixth row, Jeremy Sherman lapped all but the top 7 finishers in a caution free 25 lap feature for the ASCA unwinged 360 sprint cars Saturday night on the 1/3 mile clay oval at Manzanita Speedway. It was Sherman's fourth straight win and sixth in the last 7 races. The only mar to the streak was a 5th on August 16 as the Dave Ellis 21J car has been near perfect. Bob Ream Jr was second in the feature ahead of 2002 champion Eric Wilkins. With a 5th place run, Ricky Johnson held onto a small 26 point lead over Josh Pelkey. Fresh off a preliminary night feature win and a 4th place run in the finale of the prestigious IMCA SuperNationals in Boone IA, Terry Belcher Jr won the IMCA Modified main event. Casa Grande street stock champion Art Lacy broke a motor dueling Belcher Jr for the lead and Jay Foster ended up a career best second after Terry Belcher Sr slowed in the closing rounds to avoid a claim. Belcher Jr did have his engine claimed by Dominique Askren and he agreed to sell. Belcher Jr ended the night with Arizona state point leader Joe Warner for the Manzanita track point lead. Danny Mathus got his first Manzanita Speedway feature win in over a year in the Arizona Mini Sprint main as Dustin Carmony and Jeff Greszler chased him to the win. On Friday night, Ron Poe outraced fellow factory stock title contender Bobby Taylor for that win. Ben Shepherd beat Jeremy Kimble in the claimer feature and Dan Lawrie outraced Manzanita Speedway web site master Brad Hallin the bomber action.

The ASCA unwinged sprint cars had a great 32 car turnout and they were divided into four heat races. Pelkey beat Sherman in the dash. Brandon Lane beat Ream Jr in heat 1, Sherman outraced point leader Ricky Johnson in heat 2, Nathan High edged Pelkey in heat 3 and young R J Johnson won heat 4 over Jeff Branaman. The top four from each heat advanced and they were joined by four transfers from a 16 car B Main. A restart incident saw Buddy Earle flip end for end without injury. Paul Norbury won the B Main ahead of Joey Moriarity, Las Vegas racer Jay Ervine and Jeff Henry. Just missing transfers were Justin Fisher, Bruce St James and double division racer Scott Pasmore. The heat races and the B Main saw all the teams racing the bottom groove, but a brief sprinkling of water before the feature found everyone racing the top groove in the 25 lap A Main. In just his second start of the year, Ashley Corey led the first 3 laps before Ricky Johnson took over. Ricky Johnson was only out front for two laps before Sherman used one of his patented slide jobs to race out front. Working lapped traffic to perfection, Sherman stretched his lead to a full straight over Ricky Johnson. Ricky Johnson ran off the top of the track with five laps to go and dropped back to fifth. Ream Jr chased Sherman to the checkered flag for his best 2003 season finish. Wilkins was third and fourth starter Lane was fourth at starter Dave Cushman's checkered flag. Sherman averaged 17.28 per lap as the 25 laps took 432.05 seconds. Ricky Johnson was fifth, but Pelkey ran sixth to stay within the 26 points. Wilkins is a distant third in points and Sherman has climbed into fourth with his success. High, Yuma's Mike Martin, Davey Bateman and P Norbury rounded out tonight's top ten.

The IMCA Modifieds split 23 cars into three heat races. Belcher Sr won the first heat ahead of Chuck Black with Belcher Jr the second heat winner over Mark Fowler. Foster enjoyed a big night as he won heat 3 over Casa Grande champion R C Whitwell. Having lettered the former Rick Ward car to his tradtional #2, Lacy started on the pole for the feature and led a couple laps before Belcher Jr took over. Belcher Jr led two laps and Lacy was back out front. The rim riding Belcher Jr raced back into the lead and took his father Belcher Sr with him as they raced around Lacy. In the closing rounds, Belcher Sr slowed to fall out of the claimable top four with Foster rising to a 2nd ahead of Warner. Former drawf car star Tony Martin was 4th ahead of John Cornell, Black, Belcher Sr, Ricky Thornton, Ron Funk and Guy Norton. Whitwell had knocked Anthony Madrid off the end of the track during the race and Madrid t-boned Whitwell when racing resumed. Both Whitwell and Madrid were disqualified for their actions. The championship will be decided on Friday, Sept 26. Cornell is only 15 points back of the two leaders and 27 ahead of Thornton. Thornton is just a single point ahead of Funk. The mini sprint count dropped slightly to 19 cars. Last week's feature winner Kiley Fellars won the dash ahead of Lance Peterson. Heat wins went to Robert Mobley, Dustin Carmony and Jeff Greszler. It took Mathus just four laps to take the lead from 2002 champion Dennis Parks in the feature race. Scott Pasmore was in the second place duel when he pitted with three laps to run. Carmony and Greszler both passed Parks on the final lap to finish 2-3. Parks ran fourth ahead of Thomas Ogle, Tim Ogle, Mark Stroh and Scott Birdzell. Mathus is running second behind Greszler in the season championship fight.

The stock car action on Friday night saw 20 factory stocks, 20 claimers and 9 bombers. Terry Mumaugh won both the dash and his heat for the factory stocks. Other heat winners were Kent Staley and Chris McCurdy. Poe was second in both the dash and his heat, but he won the main event ahead of Taylor, Mumaugh, Paul Arseneau, Richard Kirn, K Staley, Ryan Roath and Mike Lilly. Brian Bennett and Donnie Birmingham wre the claimer heat winners. Shepherd ran second in his heat and won the feature honors ahead of Jeremy Kimble, Larry Upton, Chris McCurdy and Frank Outlaw. Brad Thomas, Francine Pino and Robert Husted rounded out the top 8. Dan Lawrie won the lone heat race for the bombers ahead of Hallin and Howard Powell Jr. Lawrie then took feature honors ahead of Hallin, Peter McSorley, Sheila McCurdy and John Stafford.
