Albuquerque, NM......Sept
6......Having gained the point lead at the previous race, Steve Nix from Santa
Fe increased his point margin by scoring a second straight 20 lap NMMRA unwinged
sprint car win Saturday at Duke City Raceway. Nix's racing is sponsored by Old
Trail Garage and J&R Machine. He charged from 12th starting and took the
lead in just 7 laps. Point runnerup Bo Baker from Grants ran second to stay
within 9 points of the point lead and third ranked Kelly Denison was third at
the checkered flag. With several visiting cars from the Aztec NM area, the
Barnett's Harley Davidson dirt modifieds fielded 29 cars and used three heats
and a B Main to limit the A Main to 24 cars. Veteran Toby Herring won the
feature ahead of David Sheffield and Mark McClarran. Aztec point leader Aaron
Spangler from Dove Creek CO ran fifth. Jay Pape outdueled point leader Jim
Willis for the street stock feature win and three division racer Ron Frazier Jr
was third. Rick Boelter used a feature win to move into the season point lead in
the hobby stocks. J R Bonesteel was second in the main event and stands just 2
points back of Boelter. Early season point leader Ron Frazier Jr continues to
struggle in this class as he wheeled a borrowed car to 19th and fell 8 points
back of the new point leader.
The traveling sprint car
group fielded 16 cars and they were divided into a pair of heat races. J C
Powell won the first heat race from the pole with fellow front row starter Tim
Jones second. Outside front row starter and rookie of the year point leader Jeff
Brumfield Jr won the second heat as Denison charged from 6th to place second.
The 20 lap feature had plenty of passing as both Nix and runnerup Baker came
from the 6th row, third place Denison started 10th and fourth place Jimmy Scott
from Santa Fe raced from 6th starting. Chris Faber, Powell, Jon Taylor, Tom
Ball, Brumfield Jr and Tom Jones rounded out the top ten. Nix now enjoys a 9
point lead over Baker, 35 in front of Denison and 48 ahead of defending champion
Ball. The only remaining DCR event for the club is Sept 27 but they also have
Hollywood Hills Speedway events on Sept 20 and Oct 4.
The 29 dirt modifieds were
divided into three qualifying heats with just the top 4 in each advancing into
the A Main. Ron Frazier Jr won the first heat over Kyle Odom. Point leader Butch
Reid won heat 2 over Herring. Reid ran a solid 4th in a rare El Paso start on
Friday night. M E Eddleman from Aztec won heat 3 over Sheffield. Aztec ran a non
points race on Saturday night so some of their cars traveled to Albuquerque to
garner more Barnett's Harley Davidson points. The dash event saw Reid again on
top with Odom second. Car builder Spangler had ran fifth in his heat, but he won
the 15 car B Main to earn the 13th starting slot in the A Main. The top 12
advanced with Monte Hunter second ahead of Bobby Bachechi, Jerry Johnston,
Michael O'Neal and usual Aztec racer Chris Vivolo. Herring won the A Main ahead
of Sheffield, McClarran, Richard Johnson, Spangler, Frazier Jr, Odom, Hunter and
Rob Haaland. The top 17 cars were racing at the checkered flag. Reid's track
point lead is now 35 over Frazier Jr and 46 ahead of Haaland.
There were 11
street stocks with Dan Harmon taking heat 1 over Clay Moseley. Willis won heat 2
ahead of Joe Smithberger and Pape. The feature race saw an intense duel between
Willis and Pape with Pape winning. Frazier Jr ran third ahead of Kenny McDonald,
John Hooser and Jennifer Zorn. Willis increased his point lead to 110 over Kenny
Wheeler and Harmon ended the night just 2 points back of Wheeler. The hobby
stocks fielded 22 cars and raced three heat races. Randall Trujillo, Ron Leathem
Jr and Shane Kapinski won heat races. In the feature, it was Boelter on top of J
Bonesteel, Trujillo, Thomas Hayes, Jeff Whyman, Staci March, James Shook, Charla
Robinson and Mike Dempsey. Phil York placed 10th and is just 18 points out of
first.
The track also raced an enduro
race on Sunday afternoon with 30 cars starting and 13 finishing. The event even
had a rain shower in the middle of the action and former NASCAR Southwest Tour
star Jon Paques was the $1500 winner ahead of J R Bustillo, Ronnie Salas,
Richard Reynolds and Hubie Jackson.
Only three events remain on the
2003 season schedule for the track with the dirt late models returning to join
the dirt modifieds, street stocks and hobby stocks this week. The A L Smith
Memorial Race will close the year on Sept 27 and all the track divisions race
that night.
