Unwinged 360 Sprint Cars, Mini Sprints, Factory Stocks, Claimers and Bombers

Phoenix, AZ.....Sept 5-6........Averaging 16.55 per lap in an all green 25 lap feature, Jeremy Sherman won his third straight ASCA unwinged 360 sprint car feature Saturday night at Manzanita Speedway. The win gave Sherman five wins in the last six events for the club as he paced the final 7 laps. Not having run a full schedule, Sherman has climbed to 4th in points as Ricky Johnson came out of the with a 36 point lead on Josh Pelkey in the title fight. A large field of mini sprints rounded out the Saturday night action, all on the 1/3 mile clay oval. Kiley Fellars won their feature ahead of Jeff Greszler and Dave Alexander. The factory stocks headlined the Friday night show and Reeve Staley beat point title hopeful Bobby Taylor in their feature race. Brian Bennett outraced Jeremy Kimble in the claimer main and female racer Sheila McCurdy won the bomber action ahead of Randy McCrory.

Sherman has won 12 feature races in 2003 as he has six with ASCA, five with the Arizona Midgets and a lone SCRA unwinged 410 victory. A 33 car field battled for the 20 A main starting slots. Sherman beat Bugs Norbury in heat 1 and Pelkey outraced Nathan High in heat 2. Bob Ream Jr won heat 3 over Shon Deskins while Davey Bateman outraced Jeff Branaman in heat 4. The dash found B Norbury winning ahead of Sherman and Jeff Slinkard with an average time of 16.12. The top four from each heat moved into the A Main and they were joined by four transfers from the B Main. The B Main had 16 starters and California's Darren Hagen won ahead of Brandon Lane and Slinkard. Point leader Ricky Johnson just made the cut as he edged out his young son R J Johnson for that spot. Buddy Earle was 6th ahead of Bernie Smith. In the 25 lap feature, Sherman lined up 12th, but was 4th by lap 8, third on lap 10 and second on lap 15. He passed Deskins to take over second, but stood three seconds behind leader Bateman. Bateman had taken the top spot from early leader Deskins on lap 12. Sherman used lapped traffic to quickly cut into Sherman's lead and raced into the top spot on lap 19. Sherman was 2.1 seconds ahead of Bateman at the checkered flag. Deskins ran third ahead of Chuck Buckman, Yuma's Mike Martin, Branaman, Pelkey, Ream and Eric Wilkins. 2002 champion Wilkins bounced back from his fierce crash in Casa Grande the previous weekend. With his 7th place finish compared to the 10th for Ricky Johnson, Pelkey cut the point lead in half to 36 points. Wilkins is 315 points out of first in third, but 262 ahead of Sherman. The caution free 25 lapper was run in 413.72 seconds, well off the track record of 395.28 seconds held by Ream.

The mini sprint club brought 26 cars and Dustin Carmony beat point runnerup Danny Mathus in the dash. Heat winners were rookie Tony Osuch, last year's champion Dennis Parks and point leader Greszler. Phoenis TV personality Scott Pasmore won the B Main ahead of Mathus, Tim Ogle, Scott Birdzell and Jim Mattison. Fourth ranked Fellars was chased to his feature win by Greszler, Alexander, Osuch, Carmony, Charles Mokry II, Mathus, Parks, Thomas Ogle and Mark Stroh. Greszler improved his point lead to 400 over Mathus with Thomas Ogle another 170 points back in third. Fellars is 105 back of Thomas Ogle and just 20 ahead of Stroh.

The Friday night racing drew 19 factory stocks, 17 claimers and 11 bombers. Ron Poe won the factory stock dash ahead of Ryan Roath. Heat winners were Terry Mumaugh and Richard Kirn. Mumaugh was disqualified from his feature finish as R Staley won ahead of Taylor, Clifton Maggard, his father Kent Staley, female racer Jackie Parmeley, Mike Lilly, Ed Crabtree, Poe, last week's winner Ty Warner and Roath. Robert Husted and Jeremy Lilly won claimer heat races. Bennett was third in his heat, but won the feature race ahead of Jeremy Kimble, Lilly, James Pautot, Ben Shepherd, Larry Upton and Chris McCurdy. Scott Campbell beat Howard Powell Jr in the first heat for the bombers. S McCurdy had a perfect night as she won heat 2 over Chris Attel and then raced to the main event win ahead of McCrory, Dan Lawrie, Attel, Aaron Rider and Larry Sowacke.

The same Friday night show runs this weekend the ASCA unwinged sprint cars getting a rare half-mile show on Saturday night as the IMCA Modifieds and mini sprints round out that card on the 1/3 mile clay oval.
