San Felipe Pueblo, NM.....August
29.....Opening the long tow two race weekend for the traveling USAC Southwest
unwinged sprint car series, Rick Ziehl from Las Cruces NM wheeled his Lucas Oil
sponsored Avenger to victory in the 30 lap feature Friday night at Hollywood
Hills Speedway. Ziehl had won the previous race on the schedule and he improved
his point lead over fast timer Brandon Lane by leading the final 15 laps for the
win. Long time New Mexico star Steve Nix from Santa Fe led the first 15 laps and
ran second ahead of Lane and Phoenix female star Kaylene Verville. After racing
the Friday night show on the half-mile, the teams made the long tow to Show Low
AZ to race on the quarter-mile Thunder Raceway on Saturday night.
A 22 car
field checked in and Lane paced the time trial runs with his 15.90 lap. Robert
Hall Jr ranked second at 16.17 and Yuma AZ's Mike Martin clicked off a 16.09.
Bobby Seals was fourth at 16.21. Ziehl ranked sixth behind Shon Deskins. NMMRA
2002 champion Tom Ball and Arizona star Matt Rossi were both done in hot laps.
Seals was having problems with his car and scratched from the dash where Martin
beat Hall Jr. Seals ended up parking his car and jumping into Charlie Fegan's
backup for the 30 lap feature. Verville beat Nix in heat 1. Bruce St James
flipped in the first heat, but returned to run the feature. Ronnie Clark beat
Hall Jr in heat 2 and Ziehl captured heat 3 ahead of Martin and Colorado star
Keith Rauch. Nix led the first 15 laps of the 30 lap feature with Ziehl out
front for the final 15. Nix settled for second ahead of Lane, Verville, Hall Jr,
Clark, Leighton Crouch, Fegan, Jimmy Scott and Jon Taylor.
