Albuquerque, NM.......August
23.......By racing to a win in the 20 lap NMMRA unwinged sprint car feature at
Duke City Raceway, Steve Nix from Santa Fe became the new series point leader by
4 points over Grants racer Bo Baker. Baker flipped hard in turn 1 on lap 2
Saturday night and placed last in the 16 car feature. Nix's mount carries
sponsorship from J&R Machine and Old Santa Fe Trails Garage. Current rookie
of the year point leader Jeff Brumfield Jr ran second and previous race winner
Kelly Denison, the 2002 rookie of the year, was third. Toby Herring enjoyed a
near perfect night in the Barnett's Harley Davidson dirt modified action as he
won his heat race and the feature along with a 2nd in the dash behind Robert
Haaland. Point leader Butch Reid ran second and increased his point lead to 33
points as closest challenger Ron Frazier Jr ran 12th. Fourth ranked John Aragon
was the dirt late model feature winner ahead of unsung Steve Suber and point
leader Butch Reid. In this class, Reid increased his point lead to 28 points
with Frazier Jr again second in the standings. The busy Frazier Jr is the point
leader in the hobby stocks, but again saw his point lead shrink as he ran 14th
in a 21 car race. J R Bonesteel won to move past Phil York into third in points,
just 30 tallies behind Frazier Jr. Ron Leathem Jr was second in the feature and
second ranked Rick Boelter is just 24 points behind Frazier Jr after a third
place finish.
The NMMRA unwinged sprint
cars brought a 17 car field and divided into a pair of heat races. Rookie J C
Powell won the first heat from fifth starting as Tim Jones ran second ahead of
Jimmy Scott. Club president and defending champion Tom Ball won heat 2 from
sixth as Brumfield ran second ahead of Nix. Kristy Smith was a feature scratch
and Jones shared the front row with Jon Taylor. Nix charged from 10th starting
to score his 2nd win of 2003 as fifth starter Brumfield ran second ahead of 9th
starter Denison. Santa Fe's David Burns ran fourth ahead of Ron King, Ball,
Jones and Jimmy Scott. The early race flip by Baker cost him the point lead as
he fell four points back of Nix. Denison's strong recent runs have climbed him
to third in points, but 31 tallies back of Nix. Ball is 7 points back of
Denison.
The 18 dirt modifieds
were divided into three heat races. Kyle Odom beat Taylor Yazzie and defending
track champion Tyrone Yazzie. Tyrone Yazzie had a borrowed car for the night.
Sean Hughes beat David Sheffield in heat 2, but Sheffield's track title hopes
ended when he scratched from the main event. Herring and Reid dueled for the
heat 3 win with Herring on top. Haaland took dash honors ahead of Herring.
Herring then outdueled Reid for the main event victory as Odom ran third ahead
of Jerry Johnston, Haaland, Eric Alwin, Hughes, Rob Louder and Bo Martinez. With
his finish, Haaland closed to within 9 points of 2nd ranked Frazier Jr. The nine
dirt late models were divided into a pair of heat races and Frazier Jr won heat
1 over Robert Schorr and Suber. Jim Willis returned to late model action and won
heat 2 with Aragon second ahead of Reid. Aragon then captured the feature race
with Suber second ahead of Reid, Willis, Eloy Romero, Schorr and Frazier Jr.
Romero is third in points, 30 back of runnerup Frazier Jr and just 6 ahead of
Aragon. Schorr is 8 points back of Aragon. The hobby stocks fielded 21 cars and
heat wins went to Suezanna Bonesteel, John Cruickshank and J R Bonesteel. In the
feature, it was J Bonesteel winning ahead of Leathem Jr, Boelter, a returning
Jeff Whyman, Ronnie Bell, Robert Kapinski, Thomas Hayes and Vince Archterberg.
Point leader Frazier Jr ran 14th and saw his lead shrink to 24 points over
Boelter, 30 ahead of J Bonesteel, 32 in front of 18th place finisher Phil York
and 52 ahead of Shane Kapinski.
