Unwinged 360 Sprint Cars, Midgets, Mini Sprints, Super Stocks, IMCA Modifieds, Dwarf Cars, Pure Stocks, Claimers and Bombers

August 22-23.......Manzanita Speedway celebrated it's 52nd season of continuous operation on Friday and Saturday night with 9 divisions of competition. The ASCA unwinged 360 sprint cars got a rare opportunity to race on the half-mile track Saturday night and red hot Jeremy Sherman won the feature race ahead of Justin Fisher and Davey Bateman. The Sherman-Fisher 1-2 finish duplicated their finish in the AMRA Midget main event on the smaller 1/3 mile clay oval. Dustin Carmony and Danny Mathus ran 1-2 in the AMSRA Mini Sprint main event. The Saturday night action was rounded out by the super stocks and defending track champion George Fronsman won to cut Kenny Gill's point lead to just 11 points. Gill finished third behind Kevin Willer. The IMCA Modifieds were featured on Friday night and Arizona living legend Terry Belcher Sr won the main event ahead of Anthony Madrid and Terry Belcher Jr. With his third place run, Belcher Jr cut Joe Warner's track point lead to just 2 points. Warner leads the points at both Manzanita and Canyon along with the Arizona State listing. Chris Snyder beat point leader Tim Jones in the dwarf car feature. Rookie of the year candidate Richard Kirn won the factory stock main ahead of former dirt late model racer Kent Staley. With his his third place run, Ron Poe cut Bobby Taylor's point lead to just 2 points. Donnie Birmingham beat Robert Husted in the claimer feature and Larry Sowacki returned from a lengthy absence to win the bomber feature ahead of Roger Smith.

After a tough weather week, more rain hit on Saturday night and the sprint car teams want to thank the super stocks for wheel packing the half-mile track for nearly one hour to make it raceable. The unwinged 360 sprint cars were the only division to race on the larger track on the weekend. With some of the top Arizona teams racing at the $5000 to win VRA Nationals at Perris CA, 22 unwinged sprint cars appeared and the club placed the top ten in points directly into the A Main with the other 12 cars chasing ten transfers out of a B Main. Bateman won the dash ahead of Ricky Johnson and Jimmy Norman. Sherman had to come through the B Main but he won that with Travis Cooley second ahead of Jeff Slinkard and usual USAC racer Mike Martin. Fisher claimed that final transfer forward from the B Main, but he and Sherman put on a show in the A Main as they drove through the field. Sherman won with Fisher second ahead of Bateman, Slinkard, Martin, Jay Ervine, Nathan High, R J Johnson, Josh Pelkey and Ricky Johnson. The midgets fielded 12 cars and Fisher beat David Rosales in the dash. In their feature, it was again Sherman and Fisher 1-2 ahead of Adam Young, Terry Palmer, Cole Houser, Mike Leslie, R J Johnson and Robert Ellis. Earlier this month, Young towed all the way to Banks OR and won the first BCRA Midget race ever held in Northern Oregon. The mini sprints had a solid 25 car turnout and started everyone in their main event on the 1/3 mile oval. Jessica Patterson Don Keesler in the dash. Carmony and Mathus ran 1-2 in the feature ahead of Charles Mokry, Kiley Fellars, Tony Osuch, Dennis Parks, Kurt Stults and Thomas Ogle. The sprint car teams passed the hat and came up with a donation for the super stock purse to thank them for their wheel packing efforts. The super stocks had a 20 car turnout and Anthony Madrid beat Fronsman and Willer in the dash. In the feature, it was Fronsman winning ahead of Willer, point leader Gill, Dale Wall, Mike McLean, Dennis Spidell, John Crawford, Don Costa, Ray Reynolds and Crystal Reynolds. A Madrid ran 12th and dropped 38 points back of Gill, just 8 ahead of Willer in their duel for third in points.

The IMCA Modifieds headlined the Friday night card with 24 cars racing a feature event only on the 1/3 mile clay oval. Belcher Sr won ahead of A Madrid, Belcher Jr, Ron Funk, point leader Warner, Ricky Thornton, Tom Wyman, Casa Grande street stock champion Art Lacy, Dominique Askren and David Burrows. While Warner remains just 2 points ahead of Belcher Jr, John Cornell ran 17th and dropped to 13 points behind the leader. Madrid in fourth, 32 points behind the leader and just 5 ahead of the tied duo of Funk and Thornton. The dwarf cars fielded 23 cars and Greg Loper beat Richard Milton in the dash. The B Main was dominated by the Henesey family from Show Low as Ryan Henesey won ahead of Theron Bobbitt and Helen Henesey. Snyder beat point leader Tim Jones in the A Main with teenaged rookie Nick Escobedo climbing to fourth in points with a third place run ahead of Pat Henesey, Casey Cain, Art Garcia, Denny Dowty, Roger Dvorak, Kevin Stalbaum and R Henesey. The factory stocks had the biggest turnout with 27 cars so they put the top 15 in points into the A Main and let the other 12 battle for five transfers out of the B Main. Paul Arseneau won the dash over Terry Mumaugh. Julio Hurtado won the B Main ahead of Ty Warner and double division racer Chris McCurdy. Kirn was chased to his feature win by K Staley, Poe, Clifton Maggard, Ryan Roath, T Warner, Mumaugh, Ed Crabtree and Jerry Lee. Taylor finished 17th and saw his point lead shrink to just the two points over Poe. The claimers fielded 20 cars and dash winner Donnie Birmingham won the main event ahead of Robert Husted and an unidentified driver in #23. Brian Bennett ran fourth ahead of Jeff Moeglin and Jeremy Lilly. Sowacki took the bomber main with Roger Smith second and another unidentified #28 in third. Sheila McCurdy ran fourth over General Law Jr, Brad Hallin and Troy Mangano.
