Unwinged Sprint Cars, Dirt Modifieds, Street Stocks and Hobby Stocks

Albuquerque, NM.....August 16.......Taking just 7 laps to charge from 8th starting to the lead, 2002 NMMRA unwinged sprint car 2002 rookie of the year Kelly Denison raced to his first feature win in the 20 lap main event at Duke City Raceway on Saturday night. Steve Nix continued his strong recent runs with a 2nd place finish that closed him to within 11 points of season point leader Bo Baker. Denison passed feature scratch Tom Ball to move into third in points. The combination of Butch Reid's Barnett's Harley Davidson dirt modified win and a 15th place run for Ron Frazier Jr left Reid with a 23 point lead in the track title fight. Mark Seifried had a career best second ahead of fourth ranked David Sheffield. Jim Willis added to his big street stock season point lead with a win ahead of third ranked Dan Harmon and Jay Pape. Still using a car borrowed from father Steve, J R Bonesteel won the hobby stock main event ahead of Shane Kapinski and James Shook.

19 cars checked in for the sprint car action at the 3/8 mile clay oval. L C Kesterson from Aztec won the first heat ahead of Jimmy Scott. Charlie Fegan beat Kristy Smith in heat 2. Denison had a perfect night as he won heat 3 ahead of previous race winner Joe Larkin Jr and Nix. Ball was the only main event scratch. Fegan flipped several times off turn 4 early in the race for a red flag. Kesterson led early from the pole position, but it was 8th starter Denison in the lead in just 7 laps. Nix chased him to the 20 lap checkered flag with Nick Rael third ahead of current rookie of the year point leader Jeff Brumfield Jr. Point leader Baker was fifth ahead of Kesterson, J C Powell, Chris Faber, Russell Gossett and Tim Jones. Baker's point lead is 11 over Nix and 36 ahead of Denison. The club returns to Duke City Raceway on August 23 and Sept 6.

The dirt modified action saw the return of former track champion Richard Johnson after he raced out of town for the past several weeks. The 18 car field was split into three heat races. Frazier Jr won heat 1 over Kyle Odom. J R Baxter made a rare start and won heat 2 ahead of Seifried. Sheffield outraced Johnson and Robert Haaland in heat 3. The special Dash for Cash was won by Frazier Jr ahead of Sheffield and Seifried. Reid only managed a 4th in his heat, but he drove his D&M Performance Chassis to the feature win. The main event had 16 starters with both Bo Martinez and Eric Alwin scratching. Seifried and Sheffield continued their strong evenings with 2nd and 3rd place runs ahead of Mark McClarran, Johnson, Haaland, Taylor Yazzie, Michael O'Neal and Rob Louder. Frazier is 16 points ahead of Haaland with Sheffield another 12 points back in fourth.

The street stock count improved to 15 as usual Sertoma Speedway racers Walton Kyle Jr and Walton Kyle Sr made the long tow north from Las Cruces. Double division racer Kenny Wheeler won heat 1 over Willis. Busy three division competitor Ron Frazier Jr won heat 2 ahead of Pape and Clay Moseley. Nick Herrera was a main event scratch to leave 14 cars. Willis won the feature race ahead of Harmon, Pape, Andy Tanner, Ralph Garcia, Kyle Jr, James Tyrell and Jennifer Zorn. Willis built his point lead to 88 points over Wheeler and 102 ahead of Harmon. The hobby stocks split a 26 car field into three heat races. Point leader Ron Frazier Jr won the first heat ahead of Rick Boelter while Randall Trujillo outraced Wheeler in heat 2. Suezanna Bonesteel won heat 3 ahead of Audrey Whyman. Benny Chavez, Jennifer Bertetto and Gabby Otero were all disqualified from their feature finishes as J Bonesteel won the main event ahead of S Kapinski, Shook, Trujillo, Phil York, Thomas Hayes, Staci March and Robert Kapinski. J Bonesteel is fifth, 12 points behind S Sapinski.

Fast approaching is the two race end to the New Mexico Modified Holiday Championship Series on Saturday and Sunday nights of Labor Day weekend. Both nights pay $1000 to win and the overall champion of the four race series pockets $2000. Reid and Bumper Jones from Las Cruces won the Memorial Day weekend main events. The unwinged sprint cars, dirt modifieds, late models and hobby stocks race on August 23.
