26......Returning to action after missing two races, Joe Larkin Jr charged from
10th starting to the lead in just 6 laps and he raced to a $1000 win in the 25
lap special for the NMMRA unwinged sprint cars Saturday night at Duke City
Raceway. Point runnerup Steve Nix finished second ahead of 2002 rookie of the
year Kelly Denison with point leader Bo Baker fifth behind rookie of the year
candidate Jon Taylor. The dirt modified field included three invaders from the
Las Cruces-El Paso area. Christy Georges made a last lap slide job on Toby
Herring to take the lead, but Herring stormed back to retake the lead and win
with Georges second of David Sheffield and Mark McClarran. Steve Bonesteel won
the 22 car hobby stock main event ahead of Ronnie Bell and Gabby Otero.
The sprint cars divided their
20 car turnout into three heat races. Jeff Brumfield Jr beat fellow rookie of
the year candidate Taylor in heat 1 with Kristy Smith third. Russell Gossett
raced into the lead at the white flag to win heat 2 over David Burns and Jimmy
Scott. Outside front row starter Denison won heat 3 over Tim West and Tom Ball.
Taylor beat West and Gossett in the dash. The field included Duke City Raceway
track owner Chuck Jackson in the backup car for point leader Baker. Taylor took
a quick lead in the 25 lapper as a spin by Tim Jones brought out a yellow flag
with six cars tangled. The incident ended the race for Gosseett, 2002 champion
Ball, Santa Fe newcomer Scott and new rookie Thomas Murry. Taylor was still
leading on lap 5 when Burns ran over a wheel and flipped twice without injury.
West and Baker were collected in the incident and only Baker returned for the
restart. Larkin took the lead by passing Taylor and Smith on lap 6 and was never
headed. Nix ran second ahead of Denison, Taylor, Baker, Brumfield, Chris Faber,
Michael Marfia Jr and Smith. Baker's point lead is 16 over Nix and 35 ahead of
Ball.
The 15 dirt modifieds were
divided into a pair of heat races. Tyrone Yazzie won the first heat over
Sheffield and Georges. Kyle Odom won heat 2 over McClarran and Herring. Herring
and Georges entertained the crowd with their late race duel in the main event
with Herring winning ahead of Georges, Sheffield, McClarran, Odom, Ron Frazier
Jr, Robert Haaland, Sherman Barnett and Michael O'Neal. Butch Reid blew his
engine, ran 11tha nd saw his point lead cut to 14 points by Frazier Jr, who is
the hobby stock point leader. Bo Martinez ran last behind Bumper Jones and
Taylor Yazzie to fall 9 points back of Frazier. Sheffield has climbed into a tie
with Haaland for fourth, 37 points back of Reid.
The hobby stocks split into three
heat races with Randall Trujillo, John Cruickshank and Steve Bonesteel the
winners. Top runner Rick Boelter was disqualified from his feature finish as S
Bonesteel won ahead of Bell, Otero, Phil York, Trujillo, Dan Jimenez, Staci
March, Audrey Whyman and Suezanna Bonesteel. Frazier was 19th, but holds a 44
point lead over York.
