SECOND STRAIGHT CLEAN SWEEP FOR DANNY OLMSTEAD
by Gary Jacob

NCMA Modifieds, Dirt Modifieds, Super Street Stocks,
Hobby Stocks and Figure 8

Chowchilla, CA....July 19......Following up his clean sweep at Fernley NV the previous weekend, Danny Olmstead from Tracy raced to wins in both his heat race and the main event for the NCMA Modifieds Saturday night at Chowchilla Speedway. Olmstead's first NCMA win of the 2003 season had come earlier this year in Chowchilla and the former Johnny Key  Classic winner at San Jose Speedway is looking to move up into the Bandit unwinged 360 sprint car class later this summer. The Chowchilla track champion in 2002 in the unwinged sprint cars, Keith Shipherd ran second in the main event as Russ Wullenwaber enjoyed his best Chowchilla feature finish with a third. With nearby Merced Speedway dark for their fair, Chowchilla moved their racing to Saturday night and the car count in the dirt modifieds and super street stocks improved. Backing up his big Tuesday night Merced fair win, Jack Stanford from Chowchilla won the dirt modified feature ahead of Kings Speedway's hottest driver Jimmy Reeves and Dodge powered Mitch Enos. Watsonville Speedway regular Chris Messmer enjoys his opportunities to race on the bigger 3/8 mile Chowchilla track and he won the super street stock main ahead of Frank Hannah and female racer Darcie Odgers. After a second place heat finish behind Jimmy Brewer, hobby stock point leader Marshall Weaver won their main event with former point leader Cory Gilmore second ahead of Dan Stephens and the best hobby stock run for Rachel Paul. The lure of free entry and $200 to win still only produced a five car figure 8 field and Thomas McAbee won the feature ahead of Dennis Keldsen.

There were 15 entries in the NCMA Modifieds and fast improving John Fenton from Bakersfield won the first heat ahead of George Terry and Jim Janssen. Olmstead beat Shipherd in heat 2 as Wullenwaber ran third. Charlie Correia was a main event scratch and Olmstead added that win with Shipherd second ahead of Wullenwaber, former Sprint 100 superstar Gary Koster, Doug Gandy, NCMA point leader Scott Holloway, Terry, Fenton and Burt Siverling. Track point leader Bill Saltzman was off adding to his IMCA Modified state of California point total, but the dirt modifieds had a 7 car field. Charles Paul won the heat race ahead of Enos and Reeves. Stanford ran fifth in the heat race, but won the main event in his D&M Performance Chassis as Reeves ran second in his Okie Phelan owned mount. Enos nipped Paul for third as Gary Hildebrand ran fifth ahead of Ivan Scorsur and Jon Schlundt. The track split the 8 super street stocks into a pair of heat races. Usual hobby stock racer Syd Finn raced with the super street stocks and ran second behind Messmer in the first heat race. Dennis Corn beat Roger Dory in heat 2. It was a tough night for track point leader Nathan Corn as he ran third in his heat and 6th in the feature. Finn scratched from the main event as Messmer beat Hannah, Odgers, D Corn, George Lefler Sr, N Corn and Dory.

The 16 hobby stocks were split into three heat races. Gilmore beat D Stephens in heat 1 and Brewer continued his hot streak with a win in heat 2 ahead of Weaver. Wayne Hall beat newcomer George Fawcett in heat 3. Brewer dropped out in the feature with Weaver winning ahead of Gilmore, D Stephens, R Paul, Jack VanHoff, Thomas McAbee, Ray McCann, Mike Stockton, Jeff Whatley and T J Etchison. McAbee then won the $200 prize in the figure 8 ahead of D Keldsen, Duane Fast, John Keldsen and Los Banos racer Keith Trusso.

Chowchilla will move back to their regular Friday night slot on July 25.
