TWENTY THREE WINS FOR ROBERT MILLER, OLMSTEAD SWEEPS
by Gary Jacob

IMCA Modifieds, NCMA Modifieds, Open Wheel 318's and Vintage Midgets

Fernley, NV....July 12......Climbing within 9 points of the track point lead as he struggles to overcome an opening night disqualification, IMCA Modified Nevada State point leader Robert Miller from Gardnerville raced to his fifth local win of the 2003 season Saturday night at Reno-Fernley Raceway. The victory was also an incredible 9th straight on the traveling schedule for the D&M Performance Chassis racer, a former NASCAR Pacific Coast Divisional Champion when he lived in San Jose CA. Miller won Friday night in Hawthorne to open his weekend. With nearby Rattlesnake Speedway going dark for the month of July, Fernley is racing the IMCA Modifieds weekly this month and Miller was chased to his win by defending track champion and current point leader Nick Rogers. 2002 Western Region champion Mark Allison traveled up from Las Vegas to race the Hawthorne and Fernley races and finished third ahead of former point leader Conrad Wilson. Rogers moved just a single point ahead of Wilson with his 2nd place run in an 18 car field. The NCMA Modifieds appeared with a solid 14 car field and Tracy CA's Danny Olmstead picked off his 3rd win of 2003 in clean sweep fashion. A former winner of the prestigious Johnny Key Classic at San Jose, Olmstead won his heat, the dash and the feature with point leader Scott Holloway second in the main ahead of Rick Eversult. On the same night that son Gene Kay was racing his dirt late model to a $1000 third in the prestigious Nevada Hotel 50 at Great Basin Raceway, the Kay family's elder statesman Frank Kay picked off his third Open Wheel 318 main event win in clean sweep fashion in that new class. Wally Looney gained ground on point leader Larry Silas with a 2nd place run. The BCRA Vintage Midgets appeared with 13 cars and Ron Dunn beat Dick Nelson in their feature race.

The 18 IMCA Modifieds were divided into a pair of heat races. Doug Adams won the first ahead of former street stock racer Russell Rosario and young incoming point leader Conrad Wilson. Wilson is the son of former Watsonville Speedway street stock star Dennis Wilson. Rogers won heat 2 ahead of Rick Davis and Western Region Rookie of the Year hopeful Bill Smith III. Wilson then captured dash honors. Miller ran 4th in his heat, but raced to yet another feature win with Rogers second ahead of Allison, Wilson, Friday night third place finisher James Thibodeaux, Wayne Richards, Allison's Las Vegas travelmate Joe Farre, Smith and Rosario. Friday night runnerup Rich Hill started the night third in points, but ran 16th to fall behind Miller and Smith and lose ground to point leader Rogers.

The NCMA turnout included additions like veterans Gary Koster and Charlie Correia along with Eversult and James Postell. Holloway won the first heat race ahead of Bakersfield CA long tow John Fenton and Koster. Olmstead beat Bill Felver and Correia in heat 2. Olmstead uses Wesmar power in a 2003 Stealth Chassis. He is sponsored by Stealth Motorsports West, Penske Shocks and Alpine Stars. He prefers the unwinged action and would like to join the Kings Speedway based Bandit series. Olmstead won the dash and then raced to the feature win ahead of Holloway, Eversult, Koster, Mike Johnson, Jim Janssen, Michael Zarevich, Fenton and Ed Amador.

In it's first year of action, the Open Wheel 318 class has climbed to 7 cars. Kay won the heat race ahead of Troy Crawford and Rick Looney and he also took dash honors. In the feature, it was Kay on top of second ranked Wally Looney and point leader Silas. R Looney ran fourth ahead of Crawford, Keith Michaelson and Mike Bowman.

In the BCRA Vintage Midget action, Frank Goularte beat Stu Donaldson in heat 1 and Mike Donaldson topped Tom Belfiore in the second heat. M Donaldson also took dash honors. Dick Nelson missed his heat and Sammy Belfiore was a main event scratch. Nelson got his car running to finish second to Ron Dunn in the feature. M Donaldson ran third ahead of Michael Luddon, Goulate, T Belfiore and Pete Bray.
