Phoenix, AZ...July 4.....Eric
Wilkins made it two straight wins by taking the July 4th 50 lap special for the
ASCA unwinged 360 sprint cars Friday night at Manzanita Speedway. The 50 lapper
was raced on the 3/8 mile clay oval with teenaged double division racer R J
Johnson edging out his father Ricky Johnson for second place. Justin Fisher also
did double duty and ran fourth over USAC Southwest Regular Mike Martin from
Yuma. Western World champion Jeremy Sherman won the 20 lap midget main event
ahead of Fisher and R J Johnson.
The unwinged sprint
cars raced a four heat format. Jay Ervine won the dash ahead of R J Johnson and
Michael Bonneau. Charles Davis Jr beat Bugs Norbury and Wilkins in heat 1 and
Jimmy Norman beat Josh Pelkey in heat 2. Usual USAC racer Bruce St James won
heat 3 ahead of Ricky Johnson and Ervine. Bonneau, R J Johnson and Mike Boat
were 1-2-3 in heat 4. The long distance feature race went to Wilkins ahead of R
J Johnson, Ricky Johnson, Fisher, Martin, Nathan High, Bob Ream Jr, Jeff Henry,
Bonneau and Ervine. The AMRA Midget field improved to 17 cars and David
Birmingham Jr took dash honors ahead of Mike Leslie. Sherman won heat 1 with
former dwarf car racer Terry Palmer second ahead of Leslie. R J Johnson won heat
2 over Mike Courtney and David Rosales. Sherman was the feature winner with
Fisher second ahead of R J Johnson, Birmingham Jr, Palmer, female racer Amy
Maris, #21, Rosales, Robert Ellis and Courtney.
