Phoenix, AZ.....June 27-28.....Another
big two nights of racing at Manzanita Speedway saw dash winner Eric Wilkins race
to victory in the main event for the ASCA Unwinged 360 Sprint Cars on Saturday
night. Josh Pelkey and Joey Moriarity ran 2-3 in the 20 car event. The track's
winningest driver Anthony Madrid posted wins on both Saturday and Friday nights
as he won the super stock main event ahead of defending track champion George
Fronsman and was the Friday night Factory Stock victor in front of Paul Arseneau
and Bobby Taylor. The mini sprints rounded out the Saturday night action and
nationally known modified midget veteran Jeff Henry took their feature race
ahead of Dustin Cormany and Jeff Greszler. Ben Shepherd and dash winner Brian
Bennett were 1-2 in the claimer action on Friday and Howard Powell won the
bomber main ahead of Chris Attel.
Wilkins also beat Pelkey in the dash
for the unwinged 360 sprint cars. Heat winners were Michael Bonneau, Jay Ervine
and young R J Johnson. Wilkins ran third in his heat and Pelkey was 4th in his.
In the 20 car feature, Wilkins and Pelkey repeated their 1-2 finish with
Moriarity third ahead of Bugs Norbury, Paul Norbury, Jeff Branaman, Ervine, Jeff
Slinkard, Travis Cooley and double division racer Henry. The super stocks drew a
strong turnout for a second straight week with 22 cars in the heat action and 19
surviving to start the main event. Jerry Bullis won the dash ahead of Kevin
Willer, but joined Don Costa and Doug Shadd as top ranked drivers who failed to
make the call for the feature action. Madrid and Fronsman ran 1-2 in both heat 1
and the main event. Joe Sarginger beat Larry Price in heat 2 and Larry Brigner
skipped an event at his usual home track in Casa Grande to win heat 3 over Lyle
Askren Jr. In the feature, Madrid scored his second win of the weekend ahead of
Fronsman, Kenny Gill, Askren Jr, Willer, Jeffrey Price, Dale Wall, Crystal
Reynolds and Mark Hafemeyer. 23 cars raced in the heat action for the mini
sprints, but only 21 made the call for their main event. Tony Osuch won the dash
ahead of Thomas Ogle and returned to win his heat race with Greszler second
ahead of Thomas Ogle. Kiley Fellars beat Henry in heat 1 and Charles Mokry II
won heat 3 ahead of Don Keesler. Carmony was 4th in his heat race, but ran a
strong second behind Henry in the feature race. Greszler ran third ahead of
Thomas Ogle, Danny Mathus, Mark Stroh, Duane Adams, Osuch and Kurt Stults.
The factory
stocks were the featured class on Friday night and all 19 cars survived the heat
action to race in the main event. Clifton Maggard beat crowd favorite Bobby
Taylor in the dash. Madrid, Ryan Roath and Arseneau won heat races. Madrid was
the feature winner ahead of Arseneau, Taylor, Reeve Staley, Ed Crabtree, Roath,
Maggard and Richard Kirn. The claimers fielded 18 cars for the heat races and 16
in the main event action. Bennett was the dash winner ahead of Robert Husted and
Wendell Fletcher. Larry Upton and Jeremy Kimble were the heat winners. Shepherd
only managed a fifth in his heat, but was the feature winner ahead of Bennett,
Jeremy Kimble, Kenny Wyman, James Paulot, Upton and Shane Savage. The bombers
rounded out Friday with a 16 car feature. Chris Attel and Ken Roberts were heat
winners and third place heat finisher Powell won the main event ahead of Attel,
Aaron Rider, Randy McCrory, Bobby Whitford, Jeremy Lilly, Roberts and Jeremy
Williamson.
