NMMRA POINT LEADER BAKER WINS IN ALBUQUERQUE
by Gary Jacob

Unwinged Sprint Cars, Dirt Modifieds, Street Stocks and Hobby Stocks

Albuquerque, NM.....June 21......Taking advantage of a lap 15 tangle between leader Joe Larkin Jr and second place Larry Stoerkel, point leader Bo Baker won the NMMRA unwinged sprint car feature Saturday night at Duke City Raceway. Nick Rael ran second ahead of Arizona visitor Mike Rux Jr. Toby Herring beat Richard Johnson and Ford powered Bo Martinez in the Dirt Modified main event. Johnson, Martinez and Butch Reid are locked in a tight duel for the track championship. Jay Pape beat Joe Smithberger and Ronnie Frazier in the street stock main event. Ronnie Leathem Jr took the hobby stock honors ahead of point leader Robert Kapinski and J R Bonesteel.

The unwinged sprint cars split 19 cars into three heat races. David Burns won the first heat over rookie Jeff Brumfield Jr and Jon Taylor. Charlie Fegan beat Robert Marfia Jr and Chris Faber in heat 2. Last year's rookie of the year, Kelly Denison, won an exciting heat 3. Tom Ball had passed him at the white flag, but Denison retook the lead on the final round running the high line. Ball was second ahead of Baker. Rux Jr spun to force a restart in the main event. On the next try, eight cars tangled in turn 1 with both Robert Jansson and Ball rolling in the incident. Jansson, Kevin Faber and Taylor had to be towed to the pits, but Baker was among the cars making repairs and returning. A second red flag occured on lap 4 when Tim Jones tagged Larkin Jr and flipped in turn 4. Larkin suffered minor damage and had worked his way into the lead at the midway mark of the 20 lapper. Fegan spun for a lap 15 yellow flag. On the restart, another yellow occured when Steve Nix blew a tire and collected Chris Faber. On the next attempt, second place Stoerkel got into leader Larkin to force yet another yellow. Baker inherited the lead and paced the remaining rounds to win ahead of Rael, Rux Jr, Denison and Russell Gossett. Track officials allowed Larkin to restart and he crossed the finish line in 5th, but the sprint car officials ruled that he shouldn't have been allowed a second push start and dropped him behind all the cars that finished the race.

The dirt modifieds were split into three heat races. Taylor Yazzie won the first ahead of Mike O'Neal and Sean Hughes. David Sheffield captured heat 2 ahead of  Monte Hunter and Martinez. Herring had a perfect night as he won heat 3 in front of Mark McClarran and Johnson. Herring won the feature race ahead of Johnson, Martinez, Ronnie Frazier, Reid, Donald Clinger, Robbie Haaland, Sheffield, Hunter and Yazzie. The 13 street stocks were divided into a pair of heat races. Ralph Garcia beat Ron Frazier Jr in heat 1 and Clay Moseley outraced Jim Willis in heat 2. Pape only managed a fifth in his heat race, but won the main event ahead of Smithberger and Frazier. With a fourth place run, Dan Harmon took the point lead from 13th place finisher Willis. Harmon ended the night 10 points ahead of Willis. Third ranked Kenny Wheeler ran fifth ahead of heat winners Garcia and Moseley. Wayne McCleskey made the long tow from the Tucson, AZ area to run 8th. The hobby stocks started a huge 25 car feature after three heat races. Randall Trujillo beat John Cruickshank in heat 1 and James Mickle won heat 2 over Leathem Jr. Shane Kapinski beat Ron Frazier Jr in heat 3. Leathem was chased to his feature win by point leader R Kapinski, J R Bonesteel, Steve Bonesteel and Ronnie Bell. Stew Bailey was sixth ahead of Charla Robinson and Michael Kapinski. With a 20th place run, S Kapinski fell 46 points back of point leader R Kapinski and just 8 ahead of both Frazier and Bell.
