Casa Grande, AZ......June 21.......Regulars
with the SCOA winged 410 sprint car club, Jeff Slinkard and Jeff Branaman took
advantage of an open weekend to race to a 1-2 finish Saturday night as the ASCA
unwinged 360 sprint cars made their first ever visit to Central Arizona
Raceway's 3/8 mile clay oval. A 21 car field appeared and Jesse Dunham ran third
ahead of Eric Wilkins. The Arizona Mini Sprint feature saw Charles Mokry II the
winner over Danny Mathus and Jeff Greszler. The Budweiser Street Stocks were
booked at the last minute to round out the three division show and track point
leader Art Lacy won the non-point race ahead of Mike Brigner and Alan Compton.
The unwinged 360 sprint
cars run nearly their entire 2003 schedule at Manzanita Speedway and they were
divided into three heat races on the dry Casa Grande track. The top three
feature finishers were all in heat 1, but it was female star Kaylene Verville
leading them to the checkered flag as Branaman ran second ahead of Slinkard and
Dunham. Josh Pelkey beat Paul Norbury and Charles Davis Jr in heat 2 and Joey
Moriarity captured heat 3 ahead of Jeff Henry and Jeff Wheeler. In the feature,
top runners like Henry and Davis struggled as Slinkard won ahead of Branaman,
Dunham, Wilkins, P Norbury, Pelkey, Wheeler and Michael Bonneau.
The Arizona Mini Sprints had a
similar 22 car main event following three heat races. Greszler won heat 1 over
Kiley Fellars and Brandon George. Mathus outraced Mokry and Dennis Parks in heat
2. Thomas Ogle won heat 3 with Tony Osuch second ahead of Kurt Stults. Mokry was
the feature winner with Mathus second ahead of Greszler, Thomas Ogle, Parks,
Fellars, Osuch and Dustin Cormany.
The non point status of the
street stock action cut that field down to 13 cars and Larry Brigner beat Lacy
and Jody Henderson in heat 1. M Brigner won heat 2 ahead of Compton and Perry
Mallery. In the main event, it was red hot Lacy winning ahead of M Brigner,
Compton, Henderson, Tom Hussak, Mallery, Roy Poeling and Mark Harrison.
Only one date remains on the
Central Arizona Raceway schedule before they take their annual summer break,
returning to action in August.
