31.......Coming from 9th starting and taking the lead midway through the 20 lap
feature, Bobby Seals from Peralta won the NMMRA unwinged sprint car feature
Saturday night at Duke City Raceway. Point leader Bo Baker from Grants ran
second and will carry a five point lead over Seals into the next NMMRA race on
June 21 back at Duke City Raceway. Coming off a $1,000 dirt modified win on
Memorial Day weekend, Butch Reid not only captured the Barnett Harley Davidson
dirt modified feature on Saturday night, but also wheeled his new dirt late
model to victory in that class. The Yazzie family chased Reid to the win with
Taylor Yazzie in second ahead of Tyrone Yazzie. The Yazzie's live in Farmington,
but do their racing in Albuquerque to allow more of their family to watch the
action. Ron Frazier and Eloy Romero ran 2-3 in the dirt late model feature.
Having dropped back into the hobby stock class to score a $750 win in the
Memorial Day weekend special, Dan Harmon returned to the street stock class and
won the main event ahead of Joe Smithberger and Jennifer Zorn. Ron Frazier won
the hobby stock main with Robert Kapinski second ahead of Shane Kapinski.
The sprint car action saw
16 teams racing. Third starting Charlie Fagan won the first heat with 4th
starter Chris Faber second ahead of Jeff Brumfield Jr. Seals showed his strength
early when he charged from sixth starting to win heat 2 ahead of front row
starter Nick Rael and 4th starter Joe Larkin Jr. After missing the heat action,
top runner Larry Stoerkel had to tag the 16 car feature. Fagan and C Faber
shared the front row for the 20 lapper ahead of Russell Gossett and Kristy
Smith. Seals and Nix shared the fifth row and Baker started 8th. Seals charged
into the lead midway through the 20 lapper and won with Baker a solid second.
Nix just nipped Larkin for third as Fagan ran fifth ahead of Kelly Dennison and
Gossett. Baker's point lead is 5 over Seals and 11 ahead of Nix. Both Tom Ball
and Bert Jansson missed the race, but remain tied for fourth, 22 points back of
the point leader.
The dirt modifieds had a
17 car field after the scratch of Sean Hughes. Top runner Brandon Carley
returned to Duke City with his own car after being banned from action at his
home town Aztec Speedway. Red hot Reid won the main event ahead of Taylor Yazzie,
Tyrone Yazzie, Richard Johnson, Ronnie Frazier, Bo Martinez, David Sheffield,
Mark McClarran, Monte Hunter and Kyle Odom. Carley was 15th behind Gallup long
tow Kevin Menapace. Only seven late models raced with Reid the winner ahead of
Ron Frazier, Romero, Ralph Dutcher, Steve Suber, Jim Willis and John Aragon. The
scratch of Shawn Dutcher left an 11 car street stock main event. Harmon won
ahead of Smithberger, Zorn, Henry Alvidrez, Clay Moseley, Andy Tanner, Kenny
Wheeler and double division racer Willis.
The 25 hobby stocks were
divided into three heat races. Jay Pape won the first ahead of Ron Leathem Jr
and Randy Carter. Aleta Hanna took heat 2 in front of Charla Robinson and John
Cruickshank. Shane Kapinski and April Trujillo were 1-2 in heat 3. Ron Frazier
Jr won the main event ahead of R Kapinski, S Kapinski, Trujillo, Ronnie Bell, J
R Bonesteel, Leathem Jr, Mike Bertetto and Robinson.
