Show Low, AZ....May 24-25........Having
won the main event at his home track in Imperial, CA in his only other
appearance with the touring USAC Southwest Unwinged Sprint Cars, Kent Rosevear
from Yuma, AZ showed up at the 1/4 mile Thunder Raceway in Show Low on Saturday
night and scored a wire to wire win in the 30 lap main event. Rosevear had timed
in 8th fast and ran second to fellow Yuma racer Mike Martin in his heat. Ronnie
Clark was second in the feature race ahead of Phoenix female ace Kaylene
Verville. Thunder Raceway celebrated the Memorial Day weekend with two nights of
racing and a big Dirt Modified special headlined the Sunday night action. A good
field of visitors from the Casa Grande, AZ race track gave the dirt modifieds a
20 car turnout and defending track champion Ed Beebe won the special feature
ahead of former Casa Grande champion Brad Campbell from Tucson. Talented Casa
Grande rookie Allen Kelley was third ahead of former Show Low late model
champion Jeff Anderson. The Arizona mini sprints towed up from the Phoenix area
with more than 20 cars and they raced both nights. Both feature races saw Danny
Mathus winning ahead of Charles Mokry II. Dennis Parks was third on Saturday
night and Brandon George placed third on Sunday night.
The touring unwinged
sprint cars were in the area for a two race weekend as they moved over to Canyon
Raceway on Sunday night. At the tight 1/4 mile Show Low track, Robert Marfia Jr
was the quickest qualifier in a 21 car field with a 13.02 effort. Robert Hall Jr
was second quick at 13.10 and Brandon Lane a distant third quick at 13.49. Matt
Rossi, Verville and Las Cruces, NM star Rick Ziehl rounded out the top six
fastest qualifiers. Lane beat Rossi and Marfia in the dash. Bruce St James beat
Ron Kratz in heat 1 with the Yuma duo of Martin and Rosevear 1-2 in heat 2. Lane
then won heat 3 with Aaron Reyer second ahead of Dave Burns. Hall was 7th in his
heat, but won the B Main ahead of Texan Beau Binder, Steve Stone and Mike Rux
Jr. Stone had flipped in the heat action. Jim Pless was a B Main flip victim.
The A Main had 20 starters with Pless the only non-starter. The fact that both
Hall and Binder failed to transfer from the heat action put Rosevear on the pole
of the usual USAC six car inversion. He led all 30 laps of the main event with
Clark second ahead of Verville, Rossi, Hall, Lane, Burns, Binder, Martin and
Shon Deskins. Verville took a 10 point lead over Martin down to the desert oval
Canyon Raceway on Sunday night.
The track was pleasantly
surprised with the 20 car dirt modified turnout. Campbell beat local teenage
star Ty Williams in heat 1 as A Kelley ran third. Levi Rudy won heat 2 in front
of CAR star Eric Kelley and former Pro Stock track champion Charlotte Williams.
C Williams is the mother of T Williams. Beebe enjoyed a perfect night as he won
heat 3 ahead of Brett Herron and Darren Dodd. Top runner Max Sadler had a tough
night with a 6th in his heat and a 20th in the feature. Rudy raced by Beebe for
the top spot only to be forced to pit to repair his body work. He came back to
finish sixth as Beebe won with Campbell second ahead of A Kelley, Anderson,
Tucson teenager Jeremy Payne, Rudy, Dan Radcliffe Jr and Mitch Mohler.
The Saturday night mini sprint
action found Thomas Ogle the dash winner ahead of Charles Mokry II. Tim Ogle,
Mokry and Dave Alexander won heat races. Twenty four were split into the three
heat races with just the top four finishers in each advancing into the A Main.
They were joined by the top 8 from the B Main. Mark Stroh won the B Main ahead
of Scott Birdzell, Lance Peterson, Judd Hathaway and Jessica Patterson. Mathus
ran second in his heat and won the A Main ahead of Mokry, defending champion
Parks, Kiley Fellars, Brandon George, Kurt Stults, Alexander and Brent Yarnell.
On Saturday night, it was Mathus taking the dash ahead of Parks and Mokry.
George, Mokry and Jeff Greszler won heat races. There were 21 cars in the heat
races and 20 of them raced in the main event. Mathus beat Mokry and George in
the A Main with Greszler fourth ahead of Alexander, Dustin Cormany, Stroh,
Parks, Thomas Ogle and Yarnell.
