San Felipe Pueblo, NM...May 10......2000 Series champion Joe Larkin Jr drove his Jenkins’ chassis to a near clean sweep Saturday night as the NMMRA unwinged sprint cars raced at Hollywood Hills Speedway. Only a second in the dash behind 2002 champion Tom Ball marred the night for Larkins as he won his heat race and then paced all 25 laps of the main event from the pole for a $750 payday. Bobby Seals ran a solid second and veteran Rickey Hood took advantage of an opening in his SCOA winged sprint car schedule to place third ahead of Santa Fe’s Steve Nix. The Southwest Super Trucks provided the support class and Warren Beatty won their feature ahead of Cheryl Fox.
The 23 sprint cars were divided into three heat races. Ball won the dash ahead of Larkin, Nix and 2002 rookie of the year Kelly Denison. Larkin was chased to his heat one win by Jon Taylor and JC Powell. Robert Marfia Jr scored an impressive win in heat 2 ahead of Seals and Ron King. Grants veteran Bo Baker won a talent filled heat 3 ahead of Nix, Hood and Ball. The team cars of Charlie Fagan and Ricky Johnson tangled and got into the fence. Johnson suffered a serious neck injury in the incident and both cars were feature scratches to leave a 21 car, 25 lap main event. Larkin was untouchable from his pole start in the 25 lap feature with Seals finishing second ahead of Hood, Nix, Larry Stoerkel, Bert Jansson, Russell Gossett, Nick Rael, Denison and Chris Faber. Nix has stretched his point lead as he now has 37 points. Ball is second with 29, Baker has 28 and Jansson 25. Next action for the traveling series is May 17 at Duke City Raceway. They return to Hollywood Hills on June 28.
In the super trucks, Dirk Squibb and Critt Coburn paced the heat action and Beatty won the feature race ahead of Fox, Squibb, Coburn and Brent Deetz.
