Albuquerque, NM......July 20.......The unwinged sprint cars enjoyed their best turnout of the 2002 season at Duke City Raceway and Joe Larkin Jr beat a 24 car field in their 25 lap feature. Rick Johnson ran second over Bo Baker as the top five in points all placed in the top five positions. John Aragon climbed into third place in the dirt late model points with his feature win as point leader Robert Schorr ran second. Runaway street stock point leader Jay Pape added another feature win and Thomas Winters used a second place run to climb within 10 points of second place. Fifth ranked hobby stock racer J R Bonesteel won his second straight feature race and Ron Leathem Jr used a second place finish to increase his point lead to 20 over Ronnie Bell, who placed 9th.
The 25 sprint cars were divided into three heat races. Anthony Tafoya beat Blaine Harvey in heat 1 with Larry Stoerkel edging out Kelly Denison in heat 2. Johnson won heat 3 over Miles Merritt. Larkin failed to finish top five in his heat, but the veteran racers all worked their way to the front in their 25 lap feature. Larkin won ahead of Johnson, Baker, point leading Tom Ball, Merritt, Steve Nix, Denison, Stoerkel and Jeff Brumfield. Ball’s point lead was cut to 36 points by Larkin with Merritt another 24 points back in third. Baker is just 4 points back of Merritt and 14 ahead of Johnson. The dirt late models had 9 cars in action this week. Aragon had a perfect night as he won the heat race over Jim Willis and Squeaky Mendoza. Aragon was chased to his feature win by Schorr, second ranked Willis, Carlos Dorcas, Ron Frazier, Mendoza and Brad Zellner. Schorr’s point lead is 20 over Willis and 110 ahead of Aragon. Aragon now leads Frazier by 4 points.
The 11 street stocks were divided into two heat races. Winters beat Clay Moseley in heat 1 and Pape won heat 2 over Willis and Dan Harmon. Pape finished off another perfect night with his feature win as Winters ran second over Harmon, Ralph Garcia, Moseley, Jennifer Zorn and Sean Genson. With Willis placing 10th, the double division racer dropped 86 points back of Pape and is just 10 points ahead of Winters. Moseley is just 4 points back of Winters. The hobby stocks had a 22 car turnout and Andy Genson Jr, Gage Cano and Randall Trujillo were heat winners. J R Bonesteel was second in his heat to R Trujillo and he kept his hot streak going with a second straight feature win ahead of Leathem Jr, Rick Boelter, Ronald Yates, Steve Bonesteel, Jeff Whyman, R Trujillo and Robert Kapinski. Bell ran 9th and dropped 20 points back of Leathem Jr. Whyman is 34 points back of Bell and just 8 ahead of S Bonesteel. Fifth ranked J Bonesteel is just 12 points back of his father.
