Hanford, CA...July 20......Third starter Tommy Tarlton won his first Golden State Challenge Series 30 lap feature of 2002 Saturday night as Kings Speedway closed two nights of racing in the annual tribute to legends Al Pombo and Marshall Sargent. Fourth starting Tim Kaeding was second and he will carry a 16 point lead over his father Brent Kaeding into the final two nights of racing for the 2002 series on July 26-27 at Silver Dollar Speedway. Blake Robertson ran third for the second straight night. On Saturday night, the winged 410 sprint cars were joined by a solid 25 car turnout of unwinged 360 Bandit sprint cars. Fast timer Jerome Warmerdam won their feature race after finishing third in his heat race. Former dirt late model racer Wade Griest dueled Warmerdam for the win and ran second ahead of Dale Cross and Bobby Elliott. Richard Harvey Jr was fifth and cut Gene Manhire’s series point lead to just 14 points as Manhire ran 15th. Warmerdam won from sixth starting and Griest started on the pole.
The second night of action on the weekend for the winged 410 sprint cars attracted a 30 car turnout. The track was slower than Friday night and Ronnie Day was the quickest car in time trials at 14.340. Arizona visitor Marty Wilcox ran a 14.530 for second quick as Jim Skinner ripped off a 14.380 that was later matched by Kevin Pylant. Garrett Ishii was fifth quick at 14.582. Again, the field was divided into four heat races with the top four finishers in each advancing into the A Main. Chris D’Arcy won the first heat over Ishii and Day. Jason Meyers beat Jason Statler and Tarlton in heat 2 with Friday night feature winner B Kaeding on top of the heat 3. Mike Faria and Eric Rossi chased B Kaeding to his heat win. Robertson won heat 4 with T Kaeding second over Pylant. Fourteen cars started the B Main with just six transfer spots available. Peter Murphy won with Craig Stidham second over Arizona’s Jeff Slinkard, Nick Rescino Jr, Brian Coelho and Arizona’s Steve Martin. Skinner ran sixth in his heat and just missed the transfer out of the B Main with a 7th ahead of Charlie Louden and Rick Fowzer. The 8 fastest to qualify through the heat action were inverted at the front of the 22 car A Main grid and that put Danny Faria Jr and Ricci Faria on the front row. Tarlton and T Kaeding shared row 2 ahead of Ishii, Pylant, Wilcox and Day. Tarlton outraced fellow 2nd row starter T Kaeding for the win with Robertson coming through the pack to place third ahead of Pylant, pole starter D Faria Jr, Statler, Murphy, B Kaeding, Coelho and Stidham. The series closes with two nights of racing at Chico and T Kaeding’s point lead going into that action is 16 over father B Kaeding and 29 in front of Meyers, who ran 21st. Pylant is just 3 points ahead of Murphy in their duel for fourth in points and Tarlton stands sixth in the standings.
The Bandit unwinged action drew a few visitors from the Ventura action and Warmerdam was the quickest of the 25 cars in time trials with his 18.770 lap. Greg Porte was just a click back at 18.831 and Davey Pombo Jr ran a 18.870 lap. They easily outdistanced the 19.265 for point leader Manhire and the 19.381 of Josh Davis. Manhire came from fifth to beat pole starter Elliott in the first heat with fourth starting A J Burgin taking heat 2 over third row starters Davis and Porte. Dale Cross came from third to win heat 3 as fourth starter Richard Harvey Jr was second over fifth starting Griest. Griest and Davis shared the front row for their feature with Manhire and Pombo in row 2. Porte and Warmerdam shared row 3. Warmerdam won a thrilling side by side duel with Griest for the feature win as Cross came from 10th to place third. Elliott charged forward from 13th to run fourth. Harvey was fifth over Burgin, Davis, Tom Stansberry, Derrick Hearron and Aaron Altaffer. Manhire was 15th and his point lead is 14 over Harvey and 25 ahead of Burgin. Dick Stevens is fourth in points, just 14 ahead of Altaffer.
While Kings Speedway is dark on July 27, all of their sprint car groups are in action as the Golden State Series ends their season in Chico, the winged Rebel 360 sprint cars race at Bakersfield and the Bandit series moves over to Santa Maria.
