Albuquerque, NM.....July 6.......Coming
from 7th starting, Rick Johnson outdueled Grants veteran Bo Baker to win the
unwinged sprint car main event with Miles Merritt third at Duke City Raceway
Saturday night. Having seen his point lead cut to just 4 points by Jim Willis,
Robert Schorr rebounded with a win in the dirt model feature. Willis finished
third behind Carlos Dorcas. Another dark night at Aztec Speedway saw three of
their top IMCA Stock Car racers join the street stock action at DCR. DCR point
leader Jay Pape battled his way around invader Allen Bradley on lap 18 and won
with A Bradley second over Thomas Winters and Ralph Garcia. J R Bonesteel beat
father Steve Bonesteel in the hobby stock main event.
The 18 unwinged
sprint cars were divided into three heat races. Ron King won the first over
female star Kristy Smith. Russell Gossett beat Duane Taylor in heat 2 and Baker
outran Johnson in heat 3. Johnson was the feature winner ahead of Baker,
Merritt, Tom Ball, Joe Larkin Jr, Larry Stoerkel, Kelly Denison, Larry Kesterson,
Gossett and Anthony Tafoya. The 7 dirt late models raced in a single heat race
and Kenny Wheeler won ahead of red hot John Aragon and Schorr. In the feature,
Schorr won with Dorcas second over Willis, Marc Herrera, Aragon, Wheeler and Ron
Frazier.
The 13 street stocks
raced in a pair of heat races. Garcia won the first over Aztec ace Ted Boettler.
Willis took heat 2 with Shawn Dutcher second. Both Dan Harmon and Clay Moseley
were disqualified for their main event actions with Pape making his late winning
move around A Bradley for the feature win. Thomas Winters ran third over Garcia,
Ronette Ford, Mike Ford Sr, John Hooser and Dutcher. Larry Bradley was 10th and
Boettler 11th.
Like the street stocks, the
hobby stocks were racing for the second time in 4 days and 19 cars appeared. In
the heat action, several of teams like others drive their cars since the feature
lineup is based on point averages and doesn't factor in heat results. J R
Bonesteel won the first heat over Shane Kapinski and Lee Abers. Charla Robinson
drove the Rick Boelter car to a win in heat 2 over Don Goss and Susanna
Bonesteel, who was in the Steve Bonesteel car. April Trujillo won heat 3 with
point leader Ronnie Bell second over Ron Leathem Jr. J Bonesteel won the feature
ahead of S Bonesteel, Boelter, A Trujillo, Ronald Yates, Ron Leathem Sr, Leathem
Jr, Travis Burns and Phil York.
