Lake Pleasant, AZ....July 6........After
a strong second place finish on Friday night, defending track champion Rick Ward
won the 20 lap IMCA Modified main event Saturday night at Canyon Raceway and
retook the track point lead in the process. Ward ended the weekend with a 3
point lead on John Cornell, 6 point advantage over Chuck Black and an 8 point
lead on Joe Warner. Fred Bryan got his first Canyon Raceway feature win as he
won the ASCA unwinged 360 sprint car feature with Eric Wilkins second. Joshua
Shipley scored a clean sweep of the modified midget-mini sprint show in his Mini
Sprint 600 as he won his heat, the dash and the 20 lap feature. Cole Houser ran
second over Jeff Henry.
The Saturday portion of
the two-day special for the IMCA Modifieds packed the pits with a 36 car
turnout, forcing five heats and a large B Main to set the grid for the 24 car A
Main. Heat winners were Brandon Eichelberger, Bill Slocum, Darren Williams,
Shawn Zelenka and Darin Center. Cornell raced his way into the feature with a B
Main victory as that event had 20 starters. Kevin Barnes led the first five laps
of the feature before the red flag fell with Chris Huneycutt stuck in the front
fence. Ward took command on the restart and paced the remainder of the race to
win over Shawn Zelenka, Lance Salo, an impressive Barnes effort, Terry Belcher
Sr, Mark Fowler and Cornell. With his second place finish, Zelenka moved into a
tie for fifth in points with Jason Noll, just 25 points back of Ward.
The unwinged
360 sprint cars brought a 26 car turnout. Rob Davis, Jason Sutphen and double
division racer Henry won heat races with Paul Norbury the B Main winner. Henry
led the first 3 laps of the feature race before the first caution. During the
yellow, Henry stalled on the track and Bryan led the rest of the way. A red on
lap 8 saw Bob Ream Jr and Norbury tangled. Chuck Buckman was challenging Bryan
for the lead when he spun and Eric Wilkins was the closest challenger to Bryan
in the closing rounds. Josh Pelkey ran third over Davey Bateman, Ream, Ricky
Johnson, Mike Boat, Buckman, Friday night IMCA Modified winner Terry Belcher Jr
and Jay Ervine.
For the Mini Sprint 600-Modified
Midget 250 combination, Shipley won the dash and the first heat. Scott Shaffer
won the second heat. Cole Houser led early in the feature, but was passed by
Shipley with just two laps to run in the 20 lap feature. Houser placed second
ahead of Henry, Shaffer, Derek McCluskey, James Edwards, Trey Deane and 250
winner Ron Copley.
