Albuquerque, NM......June 22.......Rebounding
from a disqualification, Joe Larkin Jr won his third NMMRA Unwinged Sprint Car
feature Saturday night at Duke City Raceway. The sprint cars put on an
outstanding show at the 3/8 mile clay oval with 18 of the 19 starters running at
the checkered flag. Nick Rael ran second over Tim West and point leader Tom
Ball. John Aragon scored a clean sweep in the dirt late models with victories in
both the heat and feature race. Double division racer Jim Willis ran second over
Squeaky Mendoza. Street Stock point leader Jay Pape won their main event with
Willis getting his second runnerup finish of the night ahead of Thomas Winters.
Steve Bonesteel is sixth in points for the hobby stocks, but he gained his first
feature win of the season by edging out point runnerups Ron Leathem Jr and Jeff
Whyman. POint leader Ronnie Bell ran fifth.
The 19 sprint cars were divided
into three heat races. Charlie Fegan won the first heat over Kristy Smith and
Tim Jones. Larry Stoerkel took heat 2 over Bo Baker and Tim West. Larkin
captured heat 3 over Jeff Brumfield and Ball. In the feature, it was Larkin
winning over Rael, West, Ball, previous race winner Baker, Rick Johnson, Miles
Merritt, Stoerkel and Fegan. Using the Duke City point system, Ball has a 34
point lead over Larkin and a 44 point margin on Merritt. Johnson is 52 points
out of the lead in fourth and 14 ahead of Rael.
The dirt late model field was
down to 7 and Aragon won the heat race over point leader Robert Schorr and
Willis. Aragon then raced to the feature win over Willis, Squeaky Mendoza,
Schorr, Ron Frazier, Marc Herrera and Mike Ford. Schorr's point lead is now 14
over Willis and 22 ahead of Frazier. The 13 street stocks were split into two
heats and Shawn Dutcher beat Ronette Ford in heat 1. Winters edged out Clay
Moseley in heat 2 with Willis third ahead of Pape. Pape posted the feature win
ahead of Willis, Winters, Dutcher, Moseley, Dan Harmon, Andy Tanner and Ralf
Garcia. Pape has built a solid 50 point lead over Moseley with Harmon 62 out of
the lead and just 2 points ahead of Willis.
The hobby stocks drew a full
feature field of 24 cars. Cody Cagle beat Dan Jimenez in heat 1 with Shane
Kapinski the second heat winner over Juan Dorcas. Randall Trujillo captured heat
3 over teammate April Trujillo. S Bonesteel was fifth in his heat, but charged
to his first feature win ahead of Leathem Jr, Whyman, A Trujillo, Bell, Phil
York, Dorcas, Robert Kapinski, R Trujillo and J R Bonesteel. Bell's point lead
is 24 over Leathem Jr, 32 ahead of Whyman and 34 ahead of York. R Trujillo is
just 4 points behind York and 30 ahead of S Bonesteel.
