TAYLOR'S FIFTH WIN CURFEW SHORTENED

by Gary Jacob

Unwinged 360 Sprint Cars and Pony Stocks

Ventura, Ca....June 8......Having started outside front row, Greg Taylor led all 12 laps of the curfew shortened VRA Unwinged 360 Sprint Car feature Saturday night at Ventura Raceway. Taylor was celebrating his 20th birthday and the win paid $1,000. He cut Josh Ford's point lead to just 235 points in the process. The scheduled 30 lapper was cut short after Russell DeBlauw had to be transported to the hospital following a first lap incident. There were several other yellow flags and only 11 cars of the 20 starters were running when the 12 lapper ended. Clark Templeman III was a $750 second ahead of Jimmy Crawford, who won $500. The Senior Sprint feature was cut to 15 laps and point leader Wiley Miller won with Ron Butler moving into a tie for 2nd with his 2nd place finish. Adam McPhail from Santa Paula won his second 20 lap Pony Stock feature after starting in the second row. James Brown was second ahead of Mike Frazier.

The VRA unwinged 360 sprint cars drew a 30 car field and used the usual four heat format. TQ Midget graduate Gene Godepski won the first heat over DeBlauw and Bill Camarillo. Steve Hess flipped hard on the opening lap. Taylor won heat 2 over Crawford and Luis Espinoza. Josh Ford won heat 3 with Jeff Heaton second over Eric Severson. Larry Lloyd flipped in turn 3. Templeman took heat 4 ahead of Jake Ford and Tony Dighera. They elected to run one B Main this night with four transfers and Steve Conrad won ahead of dwarf car graduate Trevor Brillman, Steve Gresham and Mark Weitzman.
The scheduled 30 lapper started with an innocent looking first lap incident where DeBlauw veered out of the groove and hit the concrete barrier with a light glancing blow. He complained of shoulder and back pain and it took several minutes to get him out of the car and he had to be transported to the hospital. Outside front row starter Taylor led all 12 laps for the win with pole starter Templeman second over fifth starting Crawford and third starter Josh Ford. Espinoza ran fifth over Chris Wakim, Godepski, Heaton, Conrad and Case.  Third ranked Crawford is just 110 points back of Taylor as Josh Ford, Taylor and Crawford are locked in a three way duel for the championship with fourth ranked Dighera way back.

The Senior Sprints had a 19 car turnout and Miller's win was his 4th for the season. They used a three heat format and Preiss Movius won the first heat over Mike Frith-Smith and Mike Cook. Richard Terry duplicated Movius by also winning from the pole in heat 2 with Jim Porter second over Butler. Miller came from third starting to win heat 3 with Ron Bach second over Sparky Edmonston. Bach was unable to start the 15 lap feature and Miller won from sixth starting with Butler 2nd from 8th starting. Fifth starter Cook ran third over Edmonston and  Terry. John Woodward was sixth over Dayle Henry and John Richards. Miller holds a 1220 point lead over the tied duo of Butler and Porter as Bach dropped back to 4th in points.

There were 22 Pony Stocks and Steve Klingberg won the first heat over McPhail and Eric Chambers. David Peterson won heat 2 over John Duque and Dave Revard. Jack Fullerton won heat 3 over Cliff Ashlock. McPhail won the feature over Brown, Frazier, Fullerton, Peterson, Gary Yeates, Chambers and Julie Masters. With point leader Ashlock finishing 18th and Duque 17th, the point race tightened with Ashlock now leading Frazier by 70 points, Brown by 125 and Duque by 165. Female racer Masters is fifth in points.
