Lake Pleasant, AZ...May 18........Veteran
Arizona sprint car racer Bob Ream Jr won the ASCA unwinged 360 sprint car 25 lap
feature at Canyon Raceway Saturday night. He fought off the late race challenges
of Eric Wilkins for that win with early leader Davey Bateman third. The Kenz and
Leslie BG Midget Series ran the 3/8 mile clay oval with a 13 car turnout, but it
was Chris Edwards scoring a clean sweep with wins in the dash, his heat and the
main event.
The unwinged 360 sprint cars brought
their usual strong 21 car turnout. Josh Pelkey won the dash and heat winners
were modified midget ace Jeff Henry, Fred Bryan and Wilkins. Bateman led the
first 11 laps of the 25 lap feature before Ream Jr took over. Ricky Johnson was
then riding third, but Wilkins made a late charge as he climbed into second
place. Wilkins caught Ream with 7 laps to run in the race and the talented duo
put on a show for the fans with Ream winning over Wilkins, Bateman, Johnson,
Nathan High, Jason Sutphen, Pelkey and Chris Bonneau. The 13 car midget turnout
was trimmed to 11 by the time of the feature race. Edwards won the dash and heat
winners were Edwards and Mike Welker. Welker and Edwards also put on a show for
the fans in their feature race. Welker led the first lap, then Edwards paced a
lap before Welker put his car back in front for the next ten rounds. Edwards
gained the lead for good on lap 13 and he won with Welker second over Mike
Leslie, Justin Fisher, David Birmingham Jr, R J Johnson, Doug Elliott and Tony
Everhart.
