Albuquerque, NM....May 11......Joe
Larkin Jr beat a 20 car field on a dry slick track Saturday night as the
unwinged sprint cars raced their second 2002 event at Duke City Raceway. It was
a second straight win for Larkin and Steve Nix ran second of Anthony Tafoya. Ron
Frazier Jr used a late race pass around John Aragon to win the 20 lap dirt late
model feature with Squeaky Mendosa in third. After a second place heat run, Jay
Pape won his third street stock main event with Clay Moseley second ahead of Joe
Smithberger. The hobby stocks had a 25 car turnout, but a series of incidents
saw only six laps scored before the time limit expired with Travis Burns winning
in his first appearance of 2002 over J R Bonesteel.
The sprint car action saw
Kristy Smith the first heat winner over Ron King. Bobby Seals won heat 2 over
Nick Real. Miles Merritt beat Larkin in heat 3. In the 20 lap feature, Larkin's
ability to run the extreme bottom groove paid off as he won ahead of Nix, Tafoya,
Jeff Brumfield, Larry Stoerkel, Tom Ball, Rael and Merritt. The dirt late model
have taken a clue from the big show that opened the race season at Duke City and
have had much improved action over their 2001 season efforts. There were 11 cars
on hand this night and Aragon won the first heat over Jim Willis and Robert
Schorr. Frazier won heat 2 with Mendoza second over Carlos Dorcas. Frazier won
his late race duel with Aragon for the feature win with Mndoza third over Schorr,
Willis, Dorcas, Kenny Wheeler and Mike Ford.
The street stock counts
continue to grow and it was up to 14 cars this week. Andy Tanner won the first
heat over Mike Ford Jr and Stew Bailey. Thomas Winters took heat 2 ahead of Pape
and Jerry Frazier Jr. Defending champion Jim Willis continues to struggle with a
10th place feature run after a fourth place heat finish. Pape won the feature
over Moseley, Smithberger, Dan Harmon, Ford Jr, Frazier and Ronette Ford. The
large field of hobby stocks used a three heat format with James Mickle winning
the first heat over Robert Kapinski. April Trujillo won heat 2 with Paul
Clevenger second and feature winner Burns third. Steve Bonesteel won heat 3 over
Ronnie Bell and Ron Leathem Jr. In the main event that was shortened to just 6
scored laps by several incidents included two hard rolls, Burns collected the
win ahead of J R Bonesteel, Jeff Whyman, R Kapinski, A Trujillo, incoming point
leader Phil York, Bell and Tom Hayes.
