27.......Taking the lead from modified midget star Jeff Henry, Eric Wilkins
won the 25 lap feature for the ASCA unwinged 360 sprint cars Saturday night at
Canyon Raceway. Mike Martin also got around Henry to finish second while Henry
settled for third place. The Kenz and Leslie BG Midget Series ran their 25 lap
feature without a single yellow flag and rookie Doug Elliott won in front of
young R J Johnson.
Versatile Terry Belcher Jr took dash honors
for the unwinged 360 sprint cars. Heat winners were Bob Ream Jr, Ryan Linder and
Nathan High. The 25 lap feature for the 21 cars had a restart as Fred Bryan and
Henry tangled. At the green flag, Chris Bonneau built a big lead over Henry and
Jason Sutphen. Henry and Sutphen traded second several times and Ream was hit
and stalled for a lap 5 yellow flag. Josh Pelkey got around Sutphen for
third and Henry was leading Bonneau at the midway mark. Pelkey then passed
Bonneau for second and Wilkins shuffled Bonneau back to fourth. A red flag fell
on lap 18 as Pelkey broke and tried to limp off the backstretch. His car ws
clipped by Belcher Jr and Belcher Jr went into a series of flips. He was unhurt
and Wilkins appeared to jump the following start as he took the top spot from
Henry. Martin also got by Henry for second. Wilkins posted his second straight
win at Canyon after the officials huddled together and elected not to penalize
Wilkins for his restart move. Henry ran third over Sutphan, Marty Miller,
Bonneau and Terry Belcher Sr. Bryan was 8th ahead of Ricky Johnson and Linder.
In the midget action, Chris Edwards won the
dash and his heat. Steve Sussex Jr won the second heat race. The yellow flag
free 25 lap main saw Elliott charge in front at the green flag. Dustin Burkhart
was in second at the 10 lap mark, but Johnson took over on lap 11. Elliott won
his first career midget feature with Johnson second ahead of Sussex Jr, Edwards,
Justin Fisher and an unidentified #40.
