Merced,
Ca. June 7... Ed Amador of Modesto claimed his first feature win
of the 2003
season at Merced Speedway from a 5th starting position, after also
winning his heat race. The "Flying Farmer" Amador became
the 7th main event winner in 8 NCMA races this season, demonstrating
how competitive this traveling club is. He attributed his his 10
years of racing experience at Merced's 1/4 mile dirt track to
helping him find the perfect set up for tonight's races.TBS's Scott
Holloway continues his point lead with a 2nd place finish, followed
by Pizza Factory's Doug Gandy, Western Tile's Keith Shipherd, and
OCR's Burt Siverling.
Front row starter Gandy took
the lead at the green, followed closely by Shipherd, Holloway, and
"RPM man" Russ Wullenwaber. A caution flew on lap 2 for a
spun car and Jim Janssen unfortunately got collected. On the restart
Gandy led and Holloway and Shipherd ran cleanly side by side for 4
exciting laps in the battle for second. Amador rocketed to the lead
on lap 8 and never looked back. Last season's Rookie of the Year
Wullenwaber started in 4th, spun out and made a complete 360 which
dropped him to the rear, and climbed back up to finish 6th. Rookie
drivers Mike Zarevich and Cargill's Welding John Fenton both drove
smoothly and held their lines.
Amador scored the first heat race win with
Wullenwaber and Shipherd close behind him. Holloway made a last lap
pass on Gandy to take the second heat race win. George Terry's bad
luck continued, discovering a bad fuel pump in hot laps that
prevented him from running his heat race and thus starting in the
back for the main. Terry generously loaned his other car to driver
Pat Ariaz, whose mount was still being repaired.
With a late track schedule change, we were
grateful for the opportunity to race at Merced, and give special
thanks to Matt & Glass who made it possible. NCMA returns to the
fast 1/2 mile asphalt track at Altamont Speedway next week on
Saturday, June 14.
