TRACY,
CA - JULY 26...
Ca. June 7... Another warm summer Saturday at Altamont Raceway
park proved to be a hot night for Oakley's Scott Holloway as he
powered his
TBS sprinter to victory in his heat race, the trophy dash, and the
25 lap feature on the sizzling 1/2 mile track. Holloway came from a
2nd row start next to fast qualifier Russ Wullenwaber, and after a
lap 3 caution for a spun car, charged hard to challenge front
row starter Pat Ariaz for the lead. Ariaz and Holloway dueled side
by side down the back
straight before Holloway took the lead and Ariaz slipped to the 4th
spot. The fast paced feature was slowed again when Ariaz's Steve's
Construction sprinter made contact with a spun car on lap 15, and
when the checkers flew, it was TBS's Scott Holloway, RPM's Russ
Wullenwaber, the "Flying Farmer Ed" Amador, Steve's
Construction Ariaz, and Western Tile's Keith Shipherd in the top 5.
The 1st heat race had rookie
Mike Zarevich experiencing his 1st pole start, ran flag to flag, and
was won by Ed Amador. The 2nd 8 lap heat featured NCMA's founding
father Mike Johnson making his 1st 2003 season asphalt appearance. A
torque tube problem unfortunately ended his night after only 2 laps.
Driver Steve Amador has been plagued with
mechanical problems and they continued, as he was unable to start
his heat race, which was won by Scott Holloway. TBS's Holloway also
won the trophy dash after an intense, tight battle with Pat Ariaz.
Aside from the race winners, there were
other victories tonight. Driver Larry Texeira returned to racing
with the NCMA's carburated sprint class after a bad accident in his
injected sprint a month ago. After a few practice sessions he was
feeling comfortable and was extremely grateful for his warm welcome
and for the help he received from other teams. New to pavement
racing this season, Keith Shipherd gained confidence with his
asphalt set up, and finished a strong 5th in the feature. Rookie
drivers Mike Zarevich and Cargill's Welding John Fenton had fun with
their own race going on in the back of the field.
Zarevich made a bold pass on Fenton in the main event, and both held
their lines consistently while being passed by the lead cars. Fenton
was thrilled to have his rookie flag removed at the end of the
evening. Last year's rookie of the year Russ Wullenwaber was the
happy fast qualifier, and proud of his quick 2nd place finishes in
both his heat and the main. The generous Holloway crew loaned out
tires, gears, and a carburater to help out fellow racers, and true
to form, all of the teams in this traveling group could be found
helping anyone that needed it. Tonight's race was sponsored by
Alumline, and we are all grateful for their support. The next NCMA
race will be on Saturday, August 9, at Altamont Raceway Park.
Drive
safe, have fun, and take care.
