Tracy,
Ca June 28...
On a scorching Saturday at Altamont Raceway Park, TBS's Scott
Holloway captured his first feature win on the 1/2 mile asphalt
track for this season, charging hard from a 4th starting spot to
take the early lead from dash winner Ray's Auto Body's Russ
Wullenwaber. The 20 lap main event ran at a furious pace with only
one caution for the overheated car driven by Steve Amador. Pat Ariaz,
returning from a sweep at Altamont 2 weeks ago, started his Steve's
Construction Stinger on the front row
with Russ Wullenwaber. Holloway started on the 2nd row next to last
week's Marysville feature winner Ed Amador. At the green,
Wullenwaber took the lead with Holloway and Ariaz dueling for the #2
spot. TBS's Holloway overpowered Ariaz, and on lap 2 he made the
move on Wullenwaber with his classic outside pass. The "Flying
Farmer" Ed Amador made an exciting attempt at a last lap pass
on Ariaz for the #3 spot, but was unsuccessful this time, and at the
checkers it was Holloway, Wullenwaber, Ariaz, Amador, and Western
Tile's Keith Shipherd in the top five.
The 8 lap heat race was won by Ariaz, who took
an early jump on Shipherd. The race had some breath holding passing
action when Shipherd, E.Amador, and Wullenwaber went 3 wide down the
back straight. A thrill for everyone is a 1st time trophy dash win,
and the elated smiles were contagious when we witnessed RPM's Russ
Wullenwaber's exuberant first dash victory. Wullenwaber charged to
the lead from his front row start
with Holloway pressuring him all the way to the checkers.
Wullenwaber attributed his success to the purchase of another new
tire, and his crew's hard work as well.
A welcome addition to tonight's races was new NCMA asphalt
official Tim Liddle, who kept things running smoothly all night.
Hard working crews and drivers paced themselves in the parching
heat, and water fights in the pits were frequently used to keep
everyone cool. In this traveling club everyone pulls together to
help, and tonight was no different. Both George Terry and Steve
Amador had overheating and mechanical problems, and all of the teams
pitched in with parts and labor to get both cars out for the main
event.
An extra attraction at Altamont is the entertaining rental
cam car races, who run on the inside 1/4 mile track. Tonight's cam
racers were none other than the officers in the Tracy Police
Department. Former Altamont stock car and Wingless Sprint driver
Jimmy Lavell was asked to join them, and we were thrilled to see him
qualify fastest and win the
main event in an action packed race.
Tonight's NCMA race was sponsored by the John Gomes
family. The late John Gomes, Sr. was a former club official who also
did some announcing at Altamont. The Gomes family presented Scott
Holloway with a generous check for tonight's purse. Holloway's
victory makes it his 3rd feature win this season and gives him a
sizable point lead in the NCMA championship, but the season is still
young and there are many talented
competitors in the club. NCMA's next races will be July 12 on the
fast 3/8 mile track in Fernley, Nevada, and Sat.July 19 at
Chowchilla Speedway. Have fun, drive safe, and take care.
