Tracy,
Ca June 14...
Pat Ariaz captured the heat race, trophy dash, and feature wins in
tonight's "Father's Day 50" at Altamont Raceway Park's
fast 1/2 mile paved track, grabbing his first dash victory in almost
15 years. Ariaz, a former Nevada Sprint 100 champion, came from his
2nd row starting position to take the lead on lap 2 from Western
Tile's Keith Shipherd, and continued to power it home for a flag to
flag 20 lap victory. TBS's Scott Holloway challenged Ariaz
repeatedly and took 2nd, with the hard charging RPM Russ Wullenwaber
coming from a last row start to finish 3rd. The "Flying
Farmer" Ed Amador and Western Tile/CC Auto Parts Shipherd
rounded out the top five.
Along with our NCMA
sprints, ten of the new CASA injected sprints division appeared for
tonight's special Father's Day program. Ed Amador's son, Steve,
debuted his Amador Ranch #7, but mechanical bugs prevented him from
competing. Last year's NCMA asphalt champion Dan Gonderman also came
out to race, but met with some unfortunate motor problems. One of
the best parts of tonight's racing besides the Ariaz
victory was Russ Wullenwaber's heat race win and qualifying with the
fastest time. Wullenwaber claimed a new tire made all of the
difference, and was thrilled with his success.
Ariaz started on pole in the 1st heat
race and quickly took the lead, with E.Amador and Shipherd behind
him. Amador challenged him in the low groove, and on lap 4 S.Amador
slowed then pitted, with Ariaz taking the win, followed by E.Amador,
Shipherd, and Mike Zarevich.
Ray's Automotive Wullenwaber was scheduled to
line up in the 2nd row in heat 2, but a blown engine for Gonderman
had Gonderman scratch and placed Wullenwaber on the front row.
Wullenwaber led for the entire fast 8 laps to take the win, followed
by Holloway and OCR's Burt Siverling. Ariaz led the dash with
Holloway challenging, but unable to overtake him, and at the trophy
presentations, the NCMA donated 2 club t-shirts for a treat to the
fans in the stands.
The scheduled 30 lap main was shortened to a
20 lapper, but still ran flag to flag for some fast and spectacular
racing action. Alum- Line's Ariaz took the lead from Shipherd on lap
2 , with TBS's Holloway grabbing 2nd on lap 4, followed by Western
Tile's Shipherd, Amador, and Wullenwaber. By lap 8 Wullenwaber had
powered up to 3rd, and Shipherd held off Amador's attempts for 4th.
Holloway challenged, trying the low groove on several attempts to
pass Ariaz, and Amador made a last lap pass to take 4th. At the
checkers, it was Ariaz, Holloway, Wullenwaber, Amador, Shipherd,
Siverling, and Zarevich. Mike Zarevich's smooth and steady
improvement was rewarded tonight with the removal of his rookie
flag.
We thank Amador Farms for sponsoring tonight's
races at Altamont Raceway Park, and also our families and fans who
braved the cold winds and visited us in the pits for a special
Father's Day race. Next week the NCMA sprints travel to Twin Cities
Speedway in Marysville on June 21st.
Drive safe, have fun, and take care,
Debbie
