Tracy, Ca Sept.6...TBS's Scott Holloway charged
into the lead on the first lap and sped to victory in Saturday
night's 20 lap feature on Altamont's fast 1/2 mile paved oval.
Holloway captured wins in the trophy dash and heat race, and also
qualified with the fastest time.
Tonight featured
the debut of the beautiful new car belonging to Sam Davies of
Turlock. Davies has been crewing for Ed Amador and returned to
driving after a 2 year break. It had been 30 years since he last
raced on asphalt, but he drove smoothly and had fun.Scott Holloway
was coming off of a disappointing race at TCS in Marysville last
week
where he had a healthy lead in the feature until his motor
blew on the last lap. After replacing the motor this week, engine
builder Mike Loyd was in the pits fine tuning and triple checking
"his baby".
The field was
divided into two 8 lap heat races. In the first one, pole starter
RPM's Russ Wullenwaber took the lead at the green with Western
Tile's Keith Shipherd and Pat Ariaz dueling for 2nd. Shipherd gained
the lead on lap 4, and it was a drag race to the checkers with
Steve's Construction Ariaz taking the win in a photo finish.
Wullenwaber
took the checkers in 3rd and unfortunately his motor blew
right after in a rather dramatic finish.TBS's Holloway captured the
2nd heat win, taking the lead from his father Leon on the 1st lap,
followed by J&J Dairy's Ed Amador and OCR's Burt Siverling. The
quick trophy dash win went to Holloway, too.
During the warm up laps right
before the 2nd heat race, Don Hicks had throttle problems and made
contact with the wall. He was OK, and drivers and crews went to work
on making repairs, but he was unable to continue racing. Ed Amador
discovered a whole in his radiator, and Russ Wullenwaber generously
donated the use of his. Pat Ariaz helped other drivers with fuel
when they discovered that the track supply had run out.
The caution free feature was a
thrilling duel to the checkers. Holloway powered to an early lead
with Ariaz, Shipherd, and Ed Amador in hot pursuit. Pat Ariaz gained
the lead on lap 9 utilizing lapped traffic, and Holloway took back
the lead in the same fashion. New
drivers consistently held their line as the lead cars passed them 3
wide in the corners and down the straights. Rookie John Fenton
cautiously pulled his Cargill's Welding sprinter into the infield
with suspected brake problems. The duel continued to the checkers
with Holloway scoring an exciting win, followed by Ariaz, Shipherd,
Ed Amador and Steve Amador.
This was the final NCMA
asphalt track race for the season, and Pat Ariaz's past feature wins
and tonight's strong 2nd earned him the championship in the asphalt
segment of the points race. All of tonight's races ran flag to flag,
a pleasure for fans and drivers alike. Tonight's race sponsors were
Rapid Truck Wash in Stockton and Frank's One Stop in Manteca. We are
grateful for their support, and to the promotor and officials at
Altamont for a fun, safe season of fast pavement racing. NCMA racing
action continues next Saturday Sept.13 in Fernley, Nevada, and
interested drivers are welcome to come and race on the fast 3/8 mile
track. Drive Safe, have fun, and take care.
