Having not been to a race since Turkey Night, I am feeling a bit antsy.
Oh, it is a common malady among racing fans, which suddenly find
themselves at a movie theater on Saturday evening, instead of a racing venue.
I have completed assorted “honey-dos” and
survived the holidays, making sure to spend a romantic weekend with my wife in
order to re-validate my “Kitchen Pass” for the 2004 season and none too soon
as I leave on January seventh for the Chili Bowl in Tulsa.
My traveling partner will be Lance Jennings of www.scrafan.com
fame, who is making his first appearance at the prestigious event.
If you buy the premise, that this is not a fun outing, as we will be on
duty, to report back to those left behind of our exploits at the Tulsa Oil Expo.
Included in my duties will be penning a chronicle for both www.usadirtracing.com
and Speed Media News.
Of course, it will be necessary to meet with a
number of the competitors, who happen to be old friends and may have great
stories to pass on. A few of the
racers will be targeted for interviews and fact-finding sessions to collect
material for upcoming articles.
Another of the enjoyable tasks is meeting with the
large contingent of the former racers present at this event.
As heroes from yesteryear, they make it a point to come to Tulsa each
year for a reunion with many of their rivals.
The relaxed atmosphere allows bonding and camaraderie with these old
timers, where you get to hear some of the greatest tales this side of the
Knoxville Liars Bench.
After all the socializing, they put together four
nights of pretty good Midget racing featuring nearly all of the current stars
from throughout the country. With
over two hundred entries, you know the quality is going to be first rate.
One of the things about Chili Bowl is that it is
still a down home race for regular fellows.
The management goes out of their way to make every last fan feel
appreciated, as they let them all in early in the day to cruise through the pits
and see the teams in action and visit one on one with their idols.
The annual trade show offers everything from racing parts to jewelry and
apparel. There are new racing books
offered for sale and photographers have a collection of nostalgia photos,
possibly one of your long lost hero.
Next week, this all comes to pass and the
anticipation is building as departure time nears.
Tune in soon for complete coverage of Chili Bowl, with some observations
and tidbits from some of the competitors. Racing
season is nearly started for 2004.
