Ventura, CA -May 26, 2001--After a great run from the
back row to third place in the last Senior Sprint Car race at Ventura
Raceway, Dayle Henry raced to a win in the feature this week. New
Zealand's Greg Keegan ran second over Sparky Edmonston. Former street
stock ace Chris Tonoli was disqualified from his win in the IMCA
Modified main event for not having four operating brakes with the
victory going to Rich Wolfe. Tonoli protested the call saying that he
did have four operating brakes and the temperature difference between
the right front and left front was normal. Joe Henderson won the VRA
Modified main event and cut point leader George Kreider IV's margin to
55 points. The pony stock feature was also decided in tech with James
Brown disqualified and Wade Zimmerman picking off his first ever win.
The 16 Senior Sprints were split into a pair of qualifying heat races. John Jewett won the first over Henry and Keegan. Bob Moody won the second in front of dwarf car ace Ron Bach and point leader Jim Porter. Henry then captured the main event with Keegan second over Edmonston, Porter, Ron Butler, Jewett, Mike Cook and Dale Harwood. Porter holds a solid 550 point lead over Jewett. Harwood is 95 points back of Jewett and 110 ahead of Henry. Although Bakersfield's Buck Cox was the only true visitor, the IMCA Modifieds still attracted a solid 23 car turnout. Heat winners were Gary Curtis, point leader Mike Furlong and Steve Greenland. They transferred four cars out of each heat and 8 from the B Main to set the 20 car grid for the A Main event. Rookie Mark Fullerton won the B Main over Bill Waltman, Ed Shelton and Al Adam. Tonoli paced the field to the checkered flag in the A Main only to face the controversial disqualification. This handed the win to Wolfe ahead of B Main transfer Waltman, defending champion Furlong, Houghton, Bob Dias, Steve Smith, Randy McGraw and John Aitken. Furlong's point lead is a solid 17 points over McGraw with Houghton just 2 points back of Houghton. The VRA Modifieds had an 11 car turnout and George Kreider IV won the first heat over Marty Desbrow. Garret Pegler won the second heat over Mike Schwellinger. Henderson ran last in his heat race, but won the main event ahead of Kreider, Rick Rodarte, Mark Gallimore, Marty McLaughlin and David Lidren. Rodarte is third in points, 150 behind Kreider. Desbrow had problems in the main event and finished 11th. Last season, a few of the Ventura pony stocks started going to Santa Maria Speedway on their off nights and tonight, the first Santa Maria cars visited Ventura with both Ben Caswell and Mike Weigel on hand. There were 31 pony stocks and heat wins went to point leader Shane Rungaitis, Zimmerman, Jake Ford and Dave Little. Jack Fullerton won the B Main over Cliff Ashlock and Bruce Blackman Jr. Caswell advanced to the A Main with a fourth while Weigel just missed with a sixth. Zimmerman gained the feature win with the Brown disqualification. Jody Davis finished second over Mike Frazier, Julie Masters, Adam McPhail, Jeff Graham, Blackman and Little. Point leader B Rungaitis ran 19th, but still leads the points by 175 over Ashlock. Tom Burroughs is 40 points back of Ashlock and 40 ahead of Graham.
