Ventura, CA -November 11, 2000--Having already
wrapped up the season championship for the unwinged 360 sprint cars at
Ventura Raceway, Gary Howard drove to his 7th win Saturday night. His
victory was worth $1,000 and Ronnie Case collected $750 for second.
Jeff Heaton picked off $500 for his third place finish and remained
second in points. The I-4 Modifieds raced their final year 2000 race
and champion George Kreider IV won for the 4th time. Greg Raap picked
off a heat win and then drove to his third 20 lap street stock main to
climb into 7th in track points. Just a week after he was disqualified
in postrace tech after winning his first main event, Jeff Graham
repeated the victory part and this time survived the tech procedure in
the mini stock class. Wes Richardson was second ahead of Paul
Jankovskis and Bryan Rungaitis, who will carry a 70 point lead into
the November 18th season finale. Mark Gallimore ran 11th to fall 70
points back of B Rungaitis.
The sprint car action drew another big 34 car turnout. They were
divided into the usual four heat format with the top four finishers in
each heat advancing into the 30 lap A Main. Howard won the first heat
over Heaton and Jimmy Thomson. Case took heat 2 over Chris Wakim and
Clark Templeman III. Santa Maria's Mike Knopf won heat 3 ahead of Bill
Welch. The improving Tony Dighera won heat 4 in front of John Wright.
Transferring out the B Main to fill out the 20 car A Main were Jimmy
Crawford, John Woodward, Luis Espinoza and Russell DeBlauw. Howard's
7th feature win left him with a huge 510 point lead over Heaton, who
finished third behind Case. Dighera ran fourth ahead of Greg Taylor,
Wakim, Welch, Templeman, Wright and Brett Butler. Heaton's point
advantage over Taylor is 20 with Wakim 35 points back in fourth.
The I-4 Modifieds had a ten car turnout. Point runnerup Marty
Desbrow won the first heat over Marty McLaughlin and Tommy Fowler.
Mark Joe took heat 2 over Kreider and Joe Henderson. Both Dino Delao
and Dan Coburn were feature scratches. Kreider won the main event
ahead of Joe, Desbrow, McLaughlin, Steve Chuhaloff and Henderson.
Kreider won the championship by 300 points over Desbrow, who finished
105 points ahead of Chuhaloff. McLaughlin ended the season 4th in
points.
The street stock counts remained strong despite the lengthy
schedule at the 1/5 mile clay oval. They had 19 cars this week and
Paul Moore won heat 1 over Craig Germanetti, who wrapped up his second
straight track title. Ernie Malone won heat 2 over Michael Lee. Raap
was the third heat winner over Chris Tramel. Raap has been a front
runner at all the events after the August fair and he won for the
third time ahead of Steve Bulpitt, Germanetti, Wayne Heurung, Tom
Stephens, Moore, John Uccellini and Lee. Germanetti holds an
uncatchable 310 point lead over Uccellini with Heurung third in
points.
The pony stocks had a 28 car turnout. Heat wins went to Dave Revard,
Julie Masters, Richardson and Mike Frazier. Again, four drivers
transferred out of each heat and the top four from the B Main rounded
out the 20 car field. Point leader B Rungaitis won that B Main in
front of Rick Rodarte, Matt Tramel and Shane Rungaitis. Graham had run
third in his heat, but he raced to the 20 lap A Main win over
Richardson, Jankovskis, B Rungaitis, Scott Bulpitt, Cliff Ashlock and
Rick Rodarte. B Rungaitis was rewarded for his race from 17th starting
to fourth with a 70 point lead over Gallimore, the only driver with a
shot at catching him. Ray Martinez ran 17th, but still stands third in
points, 80 ahead of Richardson, who is just 20 ahead of Ashlock.
