Unwinged 360 Sprint Cars, IMCA Modifieds, Street Stocks and Pony Stocks

Ventura, CA -September 16, 2000--Unwinged 360 sprint car point leader Gary Howard took another step towards the Ventura Raceway track championship by racing to wins in both his heat and the 30 lap main event Saturday night. Howard's win was worth $1,000 and his closest point title challengers chased him to the win with Greg Taylor a $750 second and Chris Wakim collecting $500 for third. The combination of Mike Furlong's win and disappointing efforts by the other track title hopefuls put Furlong back into the track point lead for the IMCA Modifieds. Former champion Randy McGraw finished second. Randy Miller beat Craig Germanetti in the street stock feature as this division raced for the first time since the early August fair date. James Brown beat Daniel Shrubb in the pony stock feature.

The VRA sprint cars had a 25 car turnout and the four qualifying heats were won by Howard, Wakim, Taylor and Tony Dighera. This week, the top four in each heat transferred to the 30 lap A Main and they added four transfers from the B Main. Jim Porter won the B Main ahead of John Woodward, Kenny Brown and Dayle Henry. The point leaders dominated the 30 lap A Main with Howard the winner ahead of Taylor, Wakim, Jimmy Crawford, Ronnie Case, Bill Welch, rookie Richard Renken and Jeff Heaton. The 16 IMCA Modifieds were split into a pair of heat races with Jamie Taylor winning the first ahead of incoming point leader Rich Wolfe and defending champion Donald Houghton. McGraw and Furlong ran 1-2 in the second heat with Chris Tonoli third. Wolfe's title hopefuls were dealt a big blow when he finished last in the 16 car feature. Furlong's win lifted him back into the point lead as Houghton could only manage a 13th and John Aitken an 8th. Furlong and McGraw were trailed by Tonoli, Taylor, Bill Waltman, Steve Smith and legenday pavement late model star Oren Prosser. State point leader Bill Saltzman was 9th.

The street stocks had a solid 19 car turnout. Greg Raap continued his recent strong runs with a win in the first heat over Ernie Malone. The leading feature winner in the class, Tom Stephens, took heat 2 ahead of Erick Karlsen. Dan Murphy and John Uccellini ran 1-2 in heat 3. Miller had finished 4th in his heat, but charged to a main event win ahead of point leader Craig Germanetti, Stephens, Uccellini, Raap, Mike Riccardi, Murphy and Bradley Prows. Chris Tramel raced in this class for the first time and finished 9th. The Pony Stocks drew a 30 car field again and the four heat wins went to Darren Gunnell, Paul Jankovskis, Rick Rodarte and Brown. As usual, the top four finishers in the four heats and the B Main made up the 20 car A Main. Ray Martinez beat Jack Fullerton, Frank Woodward and Bruce Blackburn Jr in the B Main that was full of top runners. Brown won the A Main ahead of Shrubb, Rodarte, Scott Bulpitt, Martinez, Bryan Rungaitis, Jankovskis and Jon Everhart. Point leader Mark Gillimore ran 14th, but still holds the lead by 65 points over Wes Richardson. Rungaitis, Martinez and Cliff Ashlock all remain in track title contention.
