Ventura, CA -August 26, 2000--Taking full advantage
of his pole start, Chris Wakim collected $1,000 for his third 30 lap
VRA unwinged 360 sprint car feature win of the season Saturday night
at Ventura Raceway. Wakim now stands just 120 points back of point
leader Gary Howard, who settled for a 9th. Fourth ranked Jeff Heaton
was a $750 second and third ranked Greg Taylor pocketed $500 for his
third place run. The IMCA Modified 20 lap feature winner also came
from the pole as Stephen Mitchell won for the second time and
collected $275. Defending track champion Donald Houghton ran second
and is just 6 points behind point leader Rich Wolfe. Marty Desbrow
became a three time winner in the I-4 Modifieds and the second ranked
driver stands 135 points back of point leader George Kreider IV. The
Pony Stocks had 30 cars racing and Mike Frazier scored his 2nd win
after earlier taking his heat race. Double division racer Chris Tramel
was second. It was the first racing action for the track since the
Ventura County Fair dates early in August and the first action for the
sprint cars since July.
There were 30 VRA sprint cars and Bill Welch won heat 1 ahead of
Jimmy Crawford. Denny McVey and John Wright ran 1-2 in heat 2. Wakim
and Taylor were 1-2 in a highly competitive heat 3. Heaton and Howard
were 1-2 in the fourth heat. Top runner Clark Templeman III broke in
his heat and was done for the night. Jeremy Ellertson escaped unhurt
in a spectacular flip in his heat when his throttle stuck. Dale
Harwood, Jessie Denome, Sparky Edmonston and Jim Thomson were the four
transfers from the B Main. Wakim won the 30 lap feature from the pole
with 3rd starting Heaton 2nd ahead of Taylor, who came from 7th. McVey
was fourth ahead of Ronnie Case, Wright, Dighera and Jim Porter. A
feature win is worth 200 points and Wakim stands 120 points back of
point leader Howard. Taylor is third, 225 points back and just 25
ahead of Heaton.
The 15 IMCA Modifieds were run in two heats with Mitchell winning
the first heat over Jamie Taylor and John Aitken. Daman Redman added
another win in heat 2 with Houghton second ahead of Kathy Pierson. In
the feature, Mitchell took the 20 lapper from the pole with Houghton
second ahead of Redman, Mike Furlong, California State point leader
Bill Saltzman, Ed Shelton, Aitken and Pierson. Incoming point leader
Rich Wolfe had a tough night with a 6th in his heat and 9th in the
main. Furlong is now just 3 points behind Wolfe and 3 ahead of
Houghton. Aitken is just 9 points out of the point lead and Steve
Smith 10 behind Wolfe. In the I-4 Modified action, Marty McLaughlin
edged Desbrow in heat 1 with point leader George Kreider IV the second
heat winner in front of Joe Henderson. Desbrow won the main and gained
a little ground on Kreider, who was fourth behind Steve Chuhaloff and
Mark Joe. Tommy Fowler ran fifth ahead of David Knight and Bill
Camarillo with 12 cars racing. Kreider stands 135 points ahead of
Desbrow, who is just 5 points ahead of both Joe and Henderson.
The highly competitive pony stock action saw Scott Bulpitt, Jack
Fullerton, Mark Gillimore and Mike Frazier with the heat wins. The top
four in each heat transferred into the 20 lap A Main and they were
joined by four transfers from the B Main where Daniel Shrubb won ahead
of Frank Woodward and Jimmy Clegg. Frazier then posted his second
feature win with Tramel, who also races in the I-4 Modifieds, second
ahead of Rick Rodarte and female ace Julie Masters. Point leader Mark
Gillimore was fifth and holds an 80 point lead over both Cliff Ashlock
and Wes Richardson. Ashlock and Richardson ran 6-7 ahead of Jon
Everhart. Bryan Rungaitis ran 9th and is 150 points out of the point
lead with previous point leader Ray Martinez slipping 170 points back
after a 12th.
