by Gary Jacob

Unwinged 360 Sprints, IMCA Modifieds and Street Stocks

Ventura, CA -July 22, 2000--After racing to a win in his heat race, VRA unwinged 360 sprint point leader Gary Howard lined up on the pole for their 30 lap main event and he raced to his fourth win of the season Saturday night at Ventura Raceway. His $1,000 win increased his point lead to 165 points over Chris Wakim, who finished fifth. Third ranked Greg Taylor broke out of a minor slump with a $750 second as Ronnie Case won $500 for his third place run. IMCA Modified rookie Daman Redman scored his second $300 win of the 2000 season in their 20 lap feature and he has climbed into 8th in season points after a slow start. With point leader Mike Furlong the first car out of the 17 car feature with engine woes, his point lead was cut to just 5 points by Rich Wolfe, who finished 6th. The top six in track points are seperated by only 22 points now. Randy Miller took advantage of his pole starting spot to race to a $125 win in the 20 lap street stock main event.

The unwinged 360 sprint car action drew a 30 car field this week and they were divided into four qualifying heats as per usual. Jeff Heaton won the first heat ahead of Taylor. John Wright edged out Clark Templeman III in heat 2. Howard won heat 3 ahead of Case and Wakim. Jimmy Crawford won heat 4 with California Lightning Sprint graduate Chris Rahe a strong second ahead of Tony Dighera. This week, they elected to allow four transfers from the B Main and start a full 20 car A Main grid. Richard McCormick won the B Main ahead of Rob Kershaw and Luis Espinoza. As the heat winner with the lowest number of passing points, Howard started on the pole for the 30 lap A Main with Wright alongside as Crawford and Heaton shared row 2. Howard raced to the rich win with 7th starter Taylor battling his way to a 2nd ahead of 6th starting Case. Wright ran fourth and Wakim battled from 11th starting to place fifth and hang onto second in points. Heaton, Templeman, Randy Moody, Crawford and Denny McVey rounded out the top ten. Howard's point lead is 165 points over Wakim, who is 90 ahead of Taylor and 125 ahead of Heaton. Crawford and Case round out the top 6 in points.

The 17 car IMCA Modified field was split into three heats. Former champion John Aitken won heat 1 with Merced Speedway regular Troy Stone making the long tow for the second straight race and placing second. Stephen Mitchell won heat 2 with Hobie Conway second. Jamie Taylor outdueled Redman to win heat 3. Redman then reversed the favor on Taylor by racing to the 20 lap A Main win with Taylor a strong second. Conway placed third ahead of Bill Waltman with defending track champion Donald Houghton using his fifth to again climb into track title point contention. Wolfe ran sixth and cut Furlong's point lead to 5 points. Mitchell, former Victorville champion Jimmy Barttelt and Chris Tonoli rounded out the top 9. Aitken is third in points, 9 behind Wolfe and just a single point ahead of Steve Smith. Houghton is fifth, 17 behind the leader and just 5 points ahead of runaway California State point leader Bill Saltzman.

They used a two heat format for the 17 street stocks as defending champion and current point leader Craig Germanetti won heat 1 ahead of Wayne Heurung. Tom Stephens beat Greg Raap in heat 2. Miller finished third in his heat and started on the pole for their 20 lap main which he won. Rookie Steve Bulpitt was second ahead of Germanetti, Dan Murphy, Mike Riccardi, Stephens, Frank Woodward and Stephen Suchowirsky. The steady Germanetti has built a 185 point lead over Heurung and 195 point lead over Uccellini, who both struggled in the 20 lapper. After missing an early season race, Stephens has battled his way back to fourth, 225 out of the lead.
