Ventura, CA -July 1, 2000--Jumping over to his father
Bob's car, Randy Moody became the first VRA unwinged 360 sprint car
driver to win three features in 2000 with his $1,000 victory in
Saturday nights 30 lap feature. He came from 5th starting for the win
while Gary Howard protected his point lead with a $500 third behind
Chris Wakim, who won $750. Wakim closed to within 25 points of second
ranked Greg Taylor with his finish as Moody stands fifth in points.
Rookie Daman Redmon used his front row starting spot to collect a $300
win in the 20 lap feature for the IMCA Modifieds. It was his first
victory and he stands 10th in points. Point leader Mike Furlong ran
third behind Steve Smith. Tom Stephens came from 5th starting as he
won the 20 lap street stock main event for his fifth win in 8 starts.
His $125 victory left him 4th in points as he missed one of this years
events. Point leader Craig Germanetti ran third behind rookie Steve
Bulpitt. The pony stocks continue to amaze with a 37 car turnout and a
9th consecutive different winner as James Brown followed up his heat
win with a victory in the 20 lap main event. Despite again finishing
outside the top five in 9th, Cliff Ashlock still holds the point lead,
but his margin has been cut to 10 points by Ray Martinez.
The VRA sprint cars had 30 cars in the pits, but only 27 survived
to race in the qualifying heats. Point runnerup Taylor, point leader
Howard, Jeff Heaton and Will Perkins were the four heat winners. The
top four from each heat advanced into the 30 lap main with a top two
required in the B Main to round out the 18 car grid. Mike Davis won
the B Main over Brett Butler. Top runner Clark Templeman III saw his
night end in the heat action. Heaton and Perkins shared the front row
for the 30 lapper with Taylor and Howard in row 2. Perkins took the
lead in turn 1, but bobbled in turn 4 and saw Howard race into the
lead ahead of Heaton and Taylor. Moody was riding in fifth after
starting there, but he made his move on lap 10 as he saw all the
leaders move to the bottom and he rode the cushion from 5th to 2nd in
one lap. Howard had built a half-straight lead, but Moody reeled him
in. Lapped traffic stopped any attempt by Moody to pass Howard for the
top spot, but on lap 20 Howard bicycled over the turn 3 cushion and
glanced off the wall before stalling. Howard restarted in the rear and
new leader Moody had a lapped car cushion over Heaton and Wakim. Wakim
passed Heaton for 2nd on lap 24 and Heaton pulled his smoking mount
into the infield before that lap was completed. Ronnie Case blew on
lap 25 and collected teammate Jimmy Crawford. In just 6 laps, Howard
had blasted from the rear to 4th. Moody rode the high line to his win
with Wakim trying slide jobs on the final two laps in turn 1, but
falling short. Howard got around Taylor late to finish third with John
Wright in 5th. Tom Stansberry was sixth ahead of Bill Welch and Jim
Gresham. Howards point lead is now 155 over Taylor, who is just 25
ahead of Wakim. Heaton fell 275 points off the pace with his DNF and
fifth ranked Moody is 400 behind point leader Howard.
The IMCA Modified action drew 19 cars, but Bakersfield Speedway
star Steve Smothermon blew in hot laps to end his night. Kings
Speedway regular Joe Chapman made the tow south from San Jose and 1998
champion Randy McGraw made his 2000 debut. Heat winners were defending
track champion Donald Houghton, point leader Furlong and Bill Waltman.
McGraw ran second to Furlong in their heat action. Redmon ran third in
his heat, but won the 20 lap main from his outside front row start.
Second row starter Smith ran second ahead of Furlong, 3rd starter
Stephen Mitchell, Houghton, John Aitken, Rich Wolfe and California
state point leader Bill Saltzman. Smothermon was hoping to close
ground on Saltzman in that point race. Furlongs point lead is now 9
over Wolfe, who is 10 in front of Aitken. After a slow start, Houghton
has climbed into fourth, 22 behind Furlong.
The street stocks also had a 19 car turnout and heat winners were
Greg Raap, Santa Barbara veteran Mike Riccardi and Stephens. Stephens
has five wins and a third in the six features that he has finished
this year. He lined up fifth for this weeks win with third starting
rookie Steve Bulpitt finishing second. Defending track champion Craig
Germanetti was third ahead of early season point leader John Uccellini,
Tracey Pallais and Wayne Heurung. Randy Miller ran 7th and veteran
Frank Woodward was 8th after car builder Dave Phipps drove his car in
the heat action. Germanettis point lead is 75 over Uccellini, who is
just five points ahead of Heurung.
The large field of Pony Stocks required top four finishes in 9 and
10 car heat race fields to make the 20 lap A Main. Those 16 drivers
were then joined by the top four from the 20 car B Main. Heat winners
were Dave Revard, Brad Long, Brown and Jack Fullerton. Double division
racer Woodward won the B Main over point runnerup Ray Martinez and
point leader Cliff Ashlock. The car filled class has 9 different
feature winners in 9 races this season. Brown won the A Main and he
was chased by a pair of rookies who are challenging for the point
lead. Wes Richardson ran second ahead of Mark Gillimore, Scott Bulpitt,
Martinez, Bryan Rungaitis, Daniel Shrubb, Long, Ashlock and Bryan
Weaver. Ashlocks point lead is just 10 over Martinez while Gillimore
stands 20 ahead of Richardson and just 75 behind point leader Ashlock.
