RANDY MOODY BECOMES THIRD DOUBLE WINNER IN VENTURA
by Gary Jacob

Unwinged 360 Sprint Cars, I-4 Modifieds and Speedway Midgets

Ventura, CA -June 10, 2000--Impressingly pulling away from the field on a final five lap sprint, Randy Moody became the third driver to capture a second 30 lap VRA unwinged 360 sprint car feature at Ventura Raceway Saturday night. His win in his Davis Racing mount was worth $1,000 and came from 3rd starting while point leader Gary Howard battled from 9th starting to gain a $750 second. Outside front row starter Clark Templeman III was a $500 third. Howard's point lead is 95 points over Chris Wakim, who finished 4th. Templeman and Greg Taylor were the other two drivers to win twice in the early season action. Although several of his competitors were upset with his aggresive driving, rookie Joe Henderson won his second straight 20 lap I-4 Modified main event and built his track point lead to 50 points over Marty Desbrow in the process. His $100 win gave him two wins, a second and 3 fourths in the six races run to date. George Kreider IV ran second ahead of Desbrow. The Speedway Midgets also raced with John Harris the feature winner ahead of Norm Reynolds and Jonathon Baier.

The VRA sprint cars continue to have outstanding car counts with 29 in action on this night. They were split into four heat races. Templeman won heat 1 ahead of Ronnie Case. Steven Conrad took heat 2 with Jim Gresham second. R Moody preceeded his feature win with a victory in heat 3 ahead of Will Perkins. Jeff Heaton won heat 4 with improving Tony Dighera second. The top four from each heat transferred into the 30 lapper and they were joined by just two transfers out of the B Main. Top runner Jimmy Crawford flipped hard in his heat as he battled for the lead on the final lap. Jim Porter won the B Main with Santa Maria visitor Mike Knopf in second ahead of Dale Harwood and Richard Reinken.

In the 30 lap feature, Heaton and Templeman shared the front row with R Moody and Conrad in row 2. Heaton charged into the lead over Templeman and R Moody with the first yellow out on lap 2 as Conrad stalled. The feature action was unreal as the drivers split between a heavy outside groove just inches off the crashwall and a heavy bottom groove that had the drivers pulling off wheelies. Heaton and Templeman traded the lead several times and Templeman's experiment with the various lines saw him lose second to R Moody when the gave the bottom a try. Templeman then switched high only to lose third to Case. R Moody held a small lead over Heaton until they got into traffic and Heaton found his route blocked. In an instance, R Moody built a half-straight lead. On lap 19, the next caution came as Heaton lost a torsion arm that brought out a caution. Heaton was sent to the rear for causing the yellow flag. Case was now second, but he elected to pull into the work area. This moved point leader Howard all the way up to second. A series of yellow flags slowed the action as Dighera spun on lap 21, Porter hit the front wall on lap 23 and Russ DeBlauw spun for a lap 25 yellow. R Moody led Howard and Templeman into that final restart with five laps to run, but he ran away over those five laps to win ahead of Howard, Templeman, Wakim, John Wright, Taylor, Heaton and Perkins. Taylor is third in points, 25 behind Wakim and 85 ahead of Heaton. R Moody is fifth in points.

The I-4 Modifieds had a 12 car turnout and David Knight won the first heat ahead of Henderson. Marty McLaughlin won heat 2 with Kreider second. In the 20 lap feature, it was Henderson the winner ahead of Kreider, Desbrow, Knight, Steve Chuhaloff, Mark Joe, Tommy Fowler and Chris Tramel. Desbrow is staying close to Henderson in the point fight, just 50 points back and 55 ahead of Kreider. Chuhaloff is only five points back of Kreider in fourth.
