WAKIM CLOSES ON POINT LEAD WITH $1,000 WIN
by Gary Jacob

Unwinged 360 Sprints, I-4 Modifieds and Pony Stocks

Ventura, CA -May 20, 2000--After winning his heat race, Chris Wakim outdueled fellow second row starter Randy Moody down the stretch to score a $1,000 win in the 30 lap VRA unwinged 360 sprint car feature Saturday night at Ventura Raceway. With his win, Wakim cut Gary Howard's track point lead to just five points as Howard ran fourth. Moody pocketed $750 for second and Clark Templeman III battled from 8th starting for the $500 third. Front row starters Howard and Jeff Heaton rounded out the top five finishers. With his win in the time shortened 10 lap feature for the I-4 modifieds, rookie Joe Henderson took over the track point lead for that class. He came from 5th starting to win with David Knight second ahead of Tommy Fowler. Another full field of pony stocks saw heat winner Chris Tramel posting his first ever feature win to climb into fourth place in the track points. B Main winner Frank Woodward battled from 15th starting to finish 2nd behind Tramel, who had started 9th.

The VRA sprint cars had a 32 car field and they were divided into four heats with the top four finishers in each advancing to the rich 30 lap A Main. R Moody won heat 1 in front of Greg Taylor. Howard and Ronnie Case were 1-2 in heat 2. Wakim won heat 3 with Steven Conrad second. Heaton and Templeman were 1-2 in the fourth heat. This week, the track elected to advance the top four finishers from the B Main into the A Main instead of the usual two and Brett Butler won that event in front of Rob Kershaw, Tony Dighera and rookie Richard Reinken. The lineup procedure that the track uses here early in 2000 puts the four heat winners in the front two rows for the 30 lap feature with the driver who advanced the most spots in his heat win starting 4th and the one who advanced the least on the pole. Heaton and Howard shared the front row with R Moody and Wakim in row 2. Wakim and R Moody ran 1-2 with Templeman third ahead of Howard, Heaton, 6th starter Ronnie Case, 12th starter Tom Stansberry and 10th starter Jimmy Crawford. Howard's point lead is just five points over Wakim. Young Greg Taylor ran 9th and remained third in points, but fell 125 points behind the point leader. Crawford and Heaton stand 4-5 in points.

The I-4 Modifieds had 11 cars and incoming point leader Marty Desbrow won heat 1 in front of Steve Chuhaloff and Henderson. Todd Keeter was second in points starting the night and he won heat 2 with George Kreider IV second. Curfew issues forced the feature to be limited to 10 laps and fifth starter Henderson won with Knight second ahead of Fowler. Mark Joe was fourth ahead of Kreider, Chuhaloff and Dino Delao. Desbrow and Keeter ran 8-9 and dropped behind Henderson in the point race. Henderson's point lead is 40 over Desbrow and 55 ahead of Keeter. Kreider and Fowler round out the top five in points.

The strong car counts for the pony stocks continued with 33 drivers in the heat race action. Like the sprint cars, the 20 car A Main grid is filled by the top four finishers in the four heats and the B Main. Heat winners were C Tramel, Ray Martinez, Scott Bulpitt and Tom Burroughs. Veteran racer Woodward only managed a 5th in his heat, but won the B Main in front of Daniel Shrubb and Gary Yeates. Feature winner C Tramel is sponsored by D & M Rebar and Ventura Muffler. He came from 9th starting and fought off the challenges of B Main winner Woodward for the victory. Fourth starter John Burroughs was third in front of 16th starting James Brown, Martinez, Wes Richardson, Darren Gunnell and T Burroughs. Cliff Ashlock finished 9th and increased his narrow point lead to 30 points over Bryan Weaver, who was 11th. D Gunnell is 120 points out of the point lead in third with C Tramel climbing to 4th, 140 points back.
