Ventura, CA -September 25, 1999-- Taking the lead on
lap 18 and fighting off the challenges of track champion Kevin Kierce
and last week's winner Clark Templeman III, Jimmy Crawford won the
IMCA Sprint Car 30 lap main at Ventura Raceway Saturday night. While
Ventura Raceway veteran Gary Curtis won the IMCA Modified main event,
Donald Houghton from Lancaster used a fifth place finish to complete
his track championship season. Tom Stephens used a pass in the final
turn of the 20 lap street stock main to snatch the win from Randy
Miller. Todd Keeter won the I-4 Modified main.
The IMCA sprint cars had another solid 24 car field, but the 30 lap
main was limited to 18 cars like usual. Missing the cut in the B Main
were Mike Frith-Smith, John Woodward, newcomer Russell DeBlauw, former
I-4 Modified racer Mike Davis, Jim Thomson and Bobby Graham. In the
main, Crawford was out front by lap 18 and ran on the ragged edge on
the very fast surface to the win. Kierce, whose father was rookie of
the year with the CRA sprint cars in 1963, had wrapped up the track
championship the previous week and ran second. Templeman was third
ahead of Bill Welch, Denny McVey, Tony Dighera, Brett Butler and Greg
Taylor. With a 19 car field, everyone was allowed to start the IMCA
Modified main and Curtis won ahead of talented rookie Mike Furlong,
veteran Rich Wolfe, rookie Chris Tonoli, champion Houghton, fellow
Lancaster long tow Bill Waltman, former champion John Aitken and Jim
Tietz. Randy Miller had built a commanding lead in the street stock 20
lapper, but a yellow with five laps to go tightened the field and
Stephens made his winning pass in the final corner. Miller was second
ahead of Craig Germanetti and Harvey Jones.
