Ventura, CA -July 3, 1999-- Racing from sixth
starting into the lead before the first caution flag, Jimmy Crawford
was a $1,000 winner in the special 40 lap IMCA Sprint Car feature
Saturday night at Ventura Raceway. It was the second night action in
the two-night Beach Party Classic. Steve Conrad made a late charge
from fifth to take second from Tom Stansberry, who settled for third.
Sponsorship from JAZ Products allowed the pony stock feature to also
pay $1,000 to win and Martin McLaughlin from Thousand Oaks picked a
great time to post his first ever feature win, a 20 lapper. Scott
Bulpitt was a $500 second. Ed Perry from Carpinteria led the final 16
laps to win the 20 lap street stock main.
The IMCA sprint cars had a 21 car turnout. They were divided into
three heats with heat wins going to Crawford, point leader Kevin
Kierce and Michael Smith. Gary Howard won the B Main that determined
the rear six spots in 18 car A Main. Missing the transfer were Clark
Templeman III, Rob Kershaw and John Woodward. Chris Smith and Jim
Thomson raced into the 1-2 slots early in the 40 lapper. Pole starter
Dale Harwood was spun far into the infield with a tap from Chris Wakim
early in the race and the move didnt draw a yellow flag. Crawford and
10th starter Stansberry struck quickly to the 2-3 spots and Crawford
was able to take the lead from C Smith before Gary Howard stalled for
the first caution flag on lap 15. Howard had climbed from 13th
starting to fourth before his problem. A second stop by Howard put him
out of the race and caused the second caution flag. Friday night
surprise winner John Wright lost an engine for the final yellow flag.
Stansberry was struggling with his handling after clipping the fence
and he lost second to Conrad in the closing rounds. Stansberry hung on
for third ahead of Kenny White, point leader Kierce, Wakim, M Smith
          and Jeff Heaton.
The huge sponsorship of JAZ Products allowed the pony stocks to
race for a track record first prize and McLaughlin collected the
$1,000 payoff. Bulpitt collected a strong $500 for second and William
Kruft was third. In the street stock 20 lapper, Tom Stephens led early
with third starting Perry quickly into second. With four laps run,
Stephens crashed with Randy Miller and Craig Germanetti. Perry
inherited the lead and paced the remaining rounds for the win with
Harvey Jones second ahead of John Uccellini and Germanetti. Uccellini
and Germanetti had entered the night tied for the point lead.
