Ventura, CA -June 12, 1999-- Riverside's Bobby Graham
won the IMCA Sprint Car feature Saturday night at Ventura Raceway. It
was his second win of 1999 and veteran SCRA sprint car driver Gary
Howard made his IMCA debut with a second ahead of Michael Smith.
Rookie IMCA Modified racer Kathy Pierson led all 20 laps to win her
first main event in her new class with Lancaster's Donald Houghton
taking over the track point lead with his second place finish. Pierson
moved into the modifieds as a teammate to Gary Curtis after a year in
the street stocks and the 1997 track championship in the pony stocks.
She is chasing the IMCA Modified Western Region rookie of the year
honor. Rob Anderson won the pro division feature for the dwarf cars
with Gary Lynch the senior division feature winner.
The IMCA Sprint Cars had a 20 car field, but the main event was limited to 18 starters with Nathan Ellertson and Jimmy Phelan missing the transfer out of the B Main. Graham won the main ahead of Howard and Smith with point leader Kevin Kierce fourth a week after he posted his 4th 1999 win. Ronnie Case was fifth ahead of Clark Templeman III, Chris Wakim, Jim Gresham and Greg Taylor. Pierson started front row in the 16 car IMCA Modified feature and was never headed despite numerous yellow flags. Houghton climbed through the field to finish second and take over the track point lead by three points over former champion John Aitken. Steve Greenland finished third ahead of Rich Wolfe, Chris Tonoli, Bill Waltman, Jamie Taylor, Aitken and Mike Furlong. The IMCA Modifieds had a 19 car field, but this class limits their main events to 16 cars. Missing the transfer from the B main were Hobie Conway, Jim Tietz and Randy Gens. Point title contender Randy McGraw was 13th in the main and visitor Steve Smith was 14th. In the Pro Division for the dwarf cars, Rob Anderson won ahead of Eric Lopez and Brian Saxton. In the Senior class, Lynch won over Steve Denham, Ron Bach and Ed Niedzwiecki.
