Ventura, CA -June 5, 1999--Posting his first feature win since
April 24, point leaer Kevin Kierce from Reseda worked his way from
12th starting to the lead in 20 laps and led the final 10 rounds to
score a $600 win in Saturday nights 30 lap IMCA Sprint Car main at
Ventura Raceway. Clark Templeman III had his best ever Ventura Raceway
finish with a second ahead of Denny McVey. The IMCA Modified feature
also went to a Reseda driver with Steve Greenland the winner ahead of
Donald Houghton. Houghton makes the tow from Lancaster for each race
and he has pulled within one point of point leader John Aitken who saw
his car severely damaged in a feature race flip. Wayne Heurung led all
20 laps to win the street stock main ahead of Tom Stephens. Darren
Gunnell from Santa Paula won his first ever Pony Stock main ahead of
Mark Fullerton.
The IMCA Sprint Cars had an 18 car turnout and all started their 30 lap main. The abundant passing that occurs during a feature for the unwinged 360 sprint cars is evident by the fact that just one of the top 10 finishers started in the first 3 rows. The race was redflagged on lap 14 when both Jimmy Crawford and Will Perkins flipped in a three car pileup. Kierce worked his way from the 6th row to pace the final 10 laps. Templeman had started 7th and McVey 8th. Greg Taylor also came from the 6th row for fourth ahead of 7th row starter Chris Wakim and 9th row starter Steve Conrad. Bill Welch and Dan Tedrick rounded out the top ten. Kierce holds a 29 point lead over Wakim and Welch is 7 more points back in third. The 20 lapper for the IMCA Modifieds also had a red flag with 8 laps to go as Aitken flipped in a tangle with Gary Curtis. Aitkens car was badly damaged and Greenland pulled away over the remaining rounds. Houghton ran second ahead of Mike Furlong and David Rhodes. Jim Tietz had led early, but he finished 6th behind Randy Gens. Defending track champion Randy McGraw was 9th and stands just 4 points behind Aitken. Jamie Taylor and Chris Tonoli rounded out the top 8.
