Former Sprint Car veteran Jim Edwards, 56, passed away on May 27th in Phoenix, Arizona only six weeks after being diagnosed with cancer. In 1967, Edwards began his racing career at legendary Ascot Park in Gardena, California in a car owned by his father, Les. Edwards competed with C.R.A. for five years before heading east to Central Pennsylvania for the opportunity to race more than once a week.
Edwards raced in Pennsylvania for 12 years winning dozens of main events and championships at Lincoln Speedway in Abbotsville, Pennsylvania. Lincoln promoter Hily Rife tabbed Edwards with the nickname “Gentleman”Jimmy Edwards and that moniker stuck with him for the remainder of his illustrious career. Edwards moved to Phoenix in 1986.
He continued winning races and in doing so won three S.C.O.A. titles. Over the past 14 years, Edwards worked as the technical advisor/salesperson at Total Seal Piston Rings representing the company at major races and trade shows nationwide. His passion in recent years turned to flying his Beechcraft Bonanza along with his many friends
at Deer Valley Airport.
Survivors include his mother Betty Edwards, his sister Leslie Drew, nephew Brandon Willard, all of Phoenix, niece Jennifer Jones of Las Vegas and his stepdaughter Kerry Ramsey of Florida.
