ROOKIE KEY BOUNCES OFF WALL, WINS FEATURE IN SANTA MARIA
by Gary Jacob

Winged 360 Sprint Cars and Unwinged 360 Sprint Cars

Santa Maria, CA....July 15...Rookie Davey Key from Fresno won the 30 lap California Rebel Cup winged 360 sprint car feature at Santa Maria Speedway Saturday night in spectacular fashion. Key had led all the way from the pole, but was being challenged by Coalingas Tim Worth on the final lap. As they approached a lapped car, Key went high and actually bounced off the crash wall while the car managed to block the inside groove run of Worth, who was shuffled back to fourth behind Kurt Nelson and Danny Faria Jr. Santa Maria Speedway regular Jimmy Thompson, a former street stock racer from Nipomo, won the 20 lap Bandit unwinged 360 sprint car main for his first ever win since moving into the sprint cars in 1999.

The winged 360 sprints drew a 13-car field and Lawrence Edlund set a new track record for the 1/3-mile clay oval with his 12.302 second qualifying run. Worth won the first heat over Faria while Nelson beat Edlund and series point leader Monte Faccinto in heat 2. Shane Travoli, winner of the first Rebel Cup visit to Santa Maria, this season was scratched from the feature after problems in his heat. Key took full advantage of his pole start in the 30 lap main as he survived the last lap excitement to pace all 30 rounds and win ahead of Nelson, Faria, Worth, Stan Greenberg, Edlund, Erik Folger, Mark Barroso and Mike Schriver. Faccinto had problems with a broken front wing and ran 11th.

The unwinged 360 Bandit sprint cars had 14 in action and Atascaderos Josh Davis established a new track record with his 13.889 second run. Thompson won the first heat over John Jewett and Mike Knopf. Winner of the previous Bandit race at the track, San Luis Obispos Greg Porte took heat 2 ahead of former late model racer Wade Griest. In the 20-lap main, Thompson started in the second row and took the lead on lap 2. Thompson fought off Porte on several different restart opportunities. The worst incident found John Jewett treated and released at the hospital after a hard encounter with an infield implement tire. Porte finished second and series point leader A J Burgin came through the pack to finish third ahead of rookie Steve Scheidt, J R Terra, Danny Sheridan and Jason Yount.
