TRAVOLI AND WARMERDAM WIN SANTA MARIA FEATURES
by Gary Jacob

Winged 360 Sprint Cars and Unwinged 360 Sprint Cars

Santa Maria, CA -May 13, 2000--Dinuba's Shane Travoli was the 30 lap feature winner Saturday night as the California Rebel Cup winged 360 sprint cars paid their first ever visit to Santa Maria Speedway's 1/3 mile clay oval. The race ended with a huge tangle that badly damaged the track's front stretch wheel fence and fast timer Craig Smith ran second in front of Tim Worth. The unwinged Bandit 360 sprint cars were also in action for the first time and Jerome Warmerdam from Hanford enjoyed a big night with fast time and the win in their 25 lap feature. Greg Porte was second in front of Danny Sheridan.

Smith posted fast time for the winged 360's with his 12.767 lap. Stan Greenberg won the first heat in front of Kurt Nelson, Ron Myska outran Danny Faria Jr in heat 2 and Travoli was the third heat winner with Tim Worth second. After Travoli and Smith had crossed the finish line to defeat the 18 car field in the 30 lap feature, Luke Bebereia, Craig Stidham and Greenberg tangled coming off turn 4 and took out much of the track's wheel fence. Both Bebereia and Stidham lost top five finishes in the incident as Worth finished third in front of Lawrence Edlund, Keith Day and point leader Monte Faccinto. Danny Faria Jr was 7th and rookie Jeff Botelho was 8th in only his second sprint car race.

Warmerdam was the fastest of the unwinged 360 sprint cars at 14.588. Greg Porte and Davey Pombo were heat winners, but Pombo hurt his motor in the process and scratched from the main event. San Luis Obispo's Porte started on the pole for the 25 lap main and led until Warmerdam raced past on lap 14. Warmerdam won with Porte second and former track champion Sheridan was third. Mike Knopf was fourth ahead of series point leader A J Burgin, Gary Rayburn Jr and Jimmy Thompson. Burgin's father Frank has a long history of success at Santa Maria Speedway back in his driving days. On lap 18, Bobby Davis Jr flipped hard into the turn 1 fence for a red flag. He was transported to the hospital, but treated and released.
