Commentary
On Saturday June 7, The Checked Flag Sprint Series (CFSS) made its fifth appearance at Charlotte County Motor Sports Park. There were 16 cars at the event.
Two hard fought heat races saw Keith Butler in the 19 hold off his challengers to win the first heat race and Darrin Miller in the 21 car do the same to take the win in the second heat race. Due to the points inversion system that is used to place the top twelve starters in the feature race, the pole sitter for the start of the race was the heat two winner, Darrin Miller, in the 21 car. Darrin made a good start and took the initial race lead. The 19 of Keith Butler and the 79 of David Slawiak were hot on his tail and fighting for both first and second places. On lap 7, David Slawiak made a pass and took the lead. Keith was unable to get around the 21 of Darrin Miler and the 79 started to pull away and make a long lead. On lap 18, there was contact between the 22 of Scott Adema and the 6X driven by Jim McCulley coming out of turn 2, bringing out the first of two cautions for the race. The 22 was able to re-fire and joined at the tail of the line of racecars, but the 6X sustained some rear end damage and was unable to restart. The race got back to green and a battle for first place soon began between the 79 of David Slawiak and the 99 driven by Brian Gingras. The second and final caution came on lap 23 when the 11X driven by Bryan Riddle spun at turn two, possibly from contact with another car. The 11X also had rear end damage and was unable to restart. The 79 and 99 battled over first place for the final 8 laps but the 99 wasn’t able to make the pass and David Slawiak took the win. Brian Gingras in the 99 finished in second place, the 21 of Darrin Miller took third, Keith Butler in the 19 claimed fourth place and Dakotah Stephens in the 79DD rounded out the top five. The Real Racin USA hard charger award went to Brian Gingras in the 99 car. No-one claimed the Barfields Clean Sweep and that rolls over for another week, making the total for the next race $500 if a car can win both their heat and the feature race.
Keith Butler and the sponsors of his car, the 19 car that has been named “The Patriot”, have started an initiative called “Race for Freedom” to collect supplies and donations for the troops overseas. Fans coming to the track can donate money or bring supplies (razors, deodorant, shampoo, baby wipes, etc) and drop them off at the track entrance. Any cash donations will be used to buy additional supplies and pay for the mailing costs. So far the Butlers have sent over 100 pounds of supplies to troops overseas thanks in a large part to the generosity of the CCMP racers and fans. The donation boxes will be available at the next CFSS race on July 4th for anyone that would like to contribute. If you can’t make it to a race but still want to contribute or would like more information, you can contact Keith at kjmotorsports@aol.com.
CFSS will be back at Charlotte County Motorsports Park on July 4th. We would like to thank the fans and the racers that have come out to support the club and we hope to see you and your friends at the next race.
