Commentary
The first point scoring race of the Checked Flag Sprint Series (CFSS) was run at Charlotte County Motor Sports Park on Saturday March 1, 2008. Fifteen cars came out to race, providing the fans with action filled heat races and a 30 lap feature race.
Pills were pulled to determine the starting order for the two heat races, and both races saw close racing with the cars two or three wide. The top 6 from each heat race pulled pills to determine their starting places for the feature, with the remaining three cars starting behind them in their heat finishing order. Wayne Reutimann Jr started on the pole for the feature race and led for two laps until he was passed by Jeff VanDusen in the 56D. Lap three brought out the first of five cautions when the 21, 81 & 00 came into contact at turn 2, ending the race for the 21 and the 81. The 79 of David Slawiak and the 22 of Scott Adema bought out the next two cautions when they each spun out. The 22 had to go in and change a tire after his spin but he made it back out before the restart and was able to rejoin the race. On lap 26, the 19 car driven by Keith Butler spun in turn 3 after contact with another car. During that caution, the 79 car also left the track with a flat tire and was able to get back out before the restart to rejoin the race. On the restart lap, the 51 car driven by Mark Gimmler who had been running in second place, spun out in turn 3 bringing out the fifth and final caution of the night. After the restart the cars ran the last 5 laps without incident and Jeff VanDusen took the win.
CFSS will be back at Charlotte County Motorsports Park in April. We would like to thank the fans and the racers that have come out to support the start up of the CFSS and we hope to see y’all at the next race. To those of you that haven’t made it to one our races yet, come and out and give us a try – you just might like it!
